All travel is now merely a means of moving a camera from place to place, all travellers are ruled by the all-powerful lens. Visitors old-fashioned enough to wish only to stand and look with their anachronistic eyes are shoved aside by the photographers, who take it for granted that while they do their ritual focusing, nothing else may move or cross their vision. Those peculiar souls without a camera must step aside for those more properly occupied, must wait while the rituals take place, and must bide their time while whole coaches stop and unleash upon the landscape the Instamatic God. And the populations of whole countries seeing themselves cannibalised, swallowed up, vacuumed into the black-ringed staring eye, wrench what they can from the cannibals. You want picture my house, my camel? You pay.
None of this would matter, perhaps, if anything worthwhile was being accomplished. If all the constant busyness and clicking produced, at its end, what had not existed before, images of beauty captured or truth told. But, sadly, this isn't so. The camera is simply graffiti made respectable.
The camera is the means by which we stamp ourselves on everything we see, under cover of recording the Wonders of the World already wonderfully
recorded by professionals and on sale at every corner bookshop and newsagent. But what use to show Aunt Maud, back home, postcards of the Tuscan landscape, since we are not in the picture to prove that we were there?
No stretch of rocks has verity unless I am within it. No monument exists
but for my wife, leaning against it. No temple is of interest without my face beside it, grinning. With my camera I appropriate everything beautiful, possess it, shrink it, domesticate it, and reproduce it on my blank sitting-room wall to prove to a selected audience of friends and family the one absolutely vital fact about these beauties: I saw them, I was there, I photographed them, and, ergo, they are.

De hedendaagse reiziger reist vooral voor zijn camera, geheel onderworpen aan de almacht van de lens. Wie het anachronistische verlangen heeft de omgeving in zich op te nemen met niets anders dan zijn eigen ogen, wordt opzijgeschoven door de fotograaf, die niet afgeleid wenst te worden tijdens zijn rituele diafragmakeuze. Excentriekelingen zonder camera dienen ruim baan te maken voor hen die wél correct zijn toegerust, een stap terug te doen terwijl busladingen met hogepriesters van de godin Nikon zich het panorama toe-eigenen, en te wachten totdat alle riten zijn voltooid. De ooit zo trotse bevolkingen van complete naties, gekannibaliseerd en opgeslurpt door de lensopening van het boze oog, proberen de kannibalen zoveel mogelijk genoegdoening te ontfutselen: "Jij foto maken mijn huis, mijn kameel? Jij betalen!"
Dit alles ware onbeduidend, wellicht, als hierbij iets wezenlijks werd gecreëerd. Als al het hectisch klikken en flitsen uiteindelijk iets zou opleveren dat voorheen nog ongekend was: beelden van bevroren schoonheid of onthulde waarheid. Maar nee. De camera is niets anders dan een geaccepteerde vorm van graffiti.
De camera is het stempel waarmee we onszelf aanbrengen op alles wat we zien, onder het voorwendsel dat we de wonderen van de wereld vastleggen. Weliswaar zijn die al talloze malen vereeuwigd door voortreffelijke fotografen en verkrijgbaar in elke boekhandel of souvenirwinkel, maar wat moet tante Magda met een ansicht van het Toscaanse landschap, als wij er zelf niet op staan om te bewijzen dat we er waren?
Geen rotspartij bestaat zolang kleine Thomas er niet overheen klautert. Geen monument is de moeite waard, tenzij mijn vrouw er tegenaan leunt. Geen tempel van belang zonder mijn grimas ernaast. Door mijn camera eigen ik me al het mooie toe. Het wordt mijn bezit, verkleind en onderworpen. Ik reproduceer het op de witte muur van mijn huiskamer en ik overtuig mijn vrienden en familie van het enige essentiële van al deze schoonheden: ik heb ze gezien, ik was er, ik heb ze gefotografeerd en, ergo, ze bestaan.

Eroticism has this in common with an addictive drug: that there is a coercive element to its pleasure with which part of us is in complicity, and part not. Thus ever since time began men have been trying to enjoy eroticism without being destroyed by it. Societies, religions can be defined in the way they deal with this conundrum. Polygamy, monogamy with repression, monogamy with affairs, monogamy with prostitutes, serial monogamy. Not to mention individual solutions of great ingenuity, or desperation: Victor Hugo with the door knocked through the wall of his office, to let in a girl each afternoon. Auden's flair for finding call-boys in every town. Picasso who simply refused when wife and mistress demanded he choose between them. Then there is always the hair-shirt of course. But perhaps the thing to remember when you wake up with a life full of fresh paint and tortuous complications is that eroticism wasn't invented for you, nor merely for the survival of the species perhaps, but for a divinity's entertainment. Nothing generates so many opportunities for titillation and schadenfreude as eroticism. Which is why it lies at the centre of so much narrative. How the gods thronged the balconies of heaven to see the consequences of Helen's betrayal! And your friends are watching too. Your antics have put the shine on many a late-night conversation.
On the borders between mythology and history, that wily survivor Odysseus was the first who learnt to trick the gods. And perhaps his smartest trick of all was that of lashing himself to the mast before the Sirens came in earshot. There are those of course who are happy to stand at the railings, even scan the horizon. Otherwise, choose your mast, find the ropes that suit you: sport, workaholism, celibacy with prayerbook and bell... But the kindest and toughest ropes of all are probably to be found in some suburban semi-detached with rowdy children and a woman who never allows the dust to settle for too long.

Net als ieder ander verslavend middel kent ook het genot van de erotiek een dwingend element, waar we ergens wel mee willen samenspannen en ergens ook weer niet. Sinds het begin der tijden tracht de mens dan ook te genieten van de erotiek zonder zich erdoor te laten vernietigen. Samenlevingen, ja zelfs religies laten zich kenschetsen door de oplossingen die ze voor dit dilemma aandragen: polygamie, monogamie met repressie, monogamie met affaires, monogamie met prostitutie, seriële monogamie. Om nog maar te zwijgen van individuele benaderingen die getuigen van grote vindingrijkheid (of wanhoop). Denk aan de geheime deur waardoor Victor Hugo elke middag een meisje in zijn kantoor binnenliet en de behendigheid waarmee W.H. Auden in elke stad wel een schandknaap wist te vinden. Of de botte weigering van Picasso toen hij door vrouw en maîtresse voor de definitieve keuze werd gesteld. En als laatste redmiddel is er natuurlijk altijd het boetekleed.
Wie zichzelf terugvindt in een leven vol met kwellende complicaties en schone leien, kan bedenken dat de erotiek niet omwille van hém is uitgevonden, noch voor het voortbestaan van de soort, maar als vertier voor de goden. Nergens vinden we zoveel gelegenheid tot prikkeling en leedvermaak als in de erotiek, niet voor niets het onderwerp van talloze verhalen. Oh, hoe de goden zich verdrongen in de loges van het hemelse theater om het verraad van Helena te aanschouwen! En ook uw vrienden zitten op de eerste rij: uw belevenissen hebben laat op de avond al menige conversatie geïnspireerd.
Op het raakvlak tussen mythologie en geschiedenis was het Odysseus – die schrandere overlever – die als eerste de goden te slim af was, toen hij zich aan de scheepsmast liet vastketenen voordat hij binnen gehoorsafstand van de sirenen kwam. Natuurlijk, er zijn dapperen die maar al te graag aan de reling staan en zelfs ongedurig de horizon afspeuren. Maar alle overigen zijn aangewezen op een stevige scheepsmast met passende ketenen: sport, een flinke werkverslaving, of misschien wel het celibaat met zijn psalmen en orgelspel...
Wellicht de vriendelijkste en tegelijkertijd sterkste ketenen van allemaal zijn de banden die je vindt in de vinexwijk, in een hoekhuis met luidruchtige kinderen en een vrouw die nooit toestaat dat zich een laagje stof vormt op het meubilair.
