Too limited. Aug 14, 2011

There should be more varietes of answers to this question, such as "good pay but dull project", "low pay but the subject is exciting", etc.

A mix of the two Aug 14, 2011

I prefer some interesting assignments to keep my mind sharp and some projects that just require me to type fast for a steady income.

But I agree with PP that there could be more possible answers.

A mix....and a combination of long-term and short-term as well Aug 14, 2011

In terms of the variable of interest level, I agree with Ditte that a mix is desirable, because "more interesting" projects tend to take longer.

In terms of the long-term/short-term dimension, my ideal is to have a long-term project with a relaxed deadline that allows me to accept short-term assignments (of my choosing) as well.

well-paid and not urgent Aug 14, 2011

I prefer well-paid and not urgent projects. Other things do not really matter.

Interesting, long term and preferably not too urgent. My favourites are a quarterly publication and an ongoing trial. Working on those interesting subjects on a regular basis makes them much quicker to handle.

Interesting... Aug 14, 2011

...without a doubt.

If a translation is only about my typing speed, that implies that it is a very easy subject using very simple language. I'd have to charge my lower rates for such a project and - since my typing isn't very fast - I'd end up with a low rate per hour and low-to-zero on the satisfaction scale.

Give me something interesting but difficult any day! I can charge more per word and use my other skills to far-outweigh my slowish typing.

As an aside, however, I've got to say that Greek English translation can never be about typing speed (unless it's just a list, for example). The grammar and syntax are so different that almost everything requires a lot of thought.

Typing Speed Aug 14, 2011

My typing speed is usually what holds me up, although I am still very productive. Most of what I do is not easy stuff, but I know it well so I can breeze through it quickly. Most of it tells some kind of story so it is also interesting, but the story normally emerges rather slowly.

I wish I could type faster, but I have physical limitations there.

I prefer much more. Aug 14, 2011

I prefer well-paid, interesting and well-written projects predominantly within my subject fields; those that will reach a wide target audience, failing that, will be useful to the client. All of this would preclude me feeling as if I am a prisoner in a typing pool. A gal can dream, can't she?

Interesting is always better in everything in life Aug 14, 2011

I prefer interesting translations, no matter if they take longer... it doesn't even matter if they are not the best paid, though it hurts. I am more willing to charge a bit less for, say, a struggling independent publisher who believes in the worth of what it publishes than doing mechanical, mind and soul-killing translations for a big company. Of course we all have to do those too, one has to eat, but I do not like them at all.

Of course we all have to do those too, one has to eat, but I do not like them at all.

Interesting projects usually have realistic, longer deadlines (though not always) that allow for the necessary time to think things over and truly consider which is the best way to say something, so that it is faithful to the original but also sounds better in the target language and flows with a music of its own. The research, the learning, the playing with language, all that makes of translation a beautiful job, and the challenge of a difficult subject is always exciting.

Fast mechanical things make want to jump out of the window, though I am very willing to do them when job is scarce...

All of the above Aug 15, 2011

Between loping along and having to take my time, I like some of both.
