(1) Year-end membership campaign: 'Pursue your full potential'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A year-end membership campaign is currently underway, with the theme "Pursue your full potential." The image used is the ladybug / ladybird.
In this campaign, professional translators and translation company personnel who are not yet ProZ.com members are invited to join the rest of the ProZ.com community in together "networking, expanding client bases, doing better work, and having more fun."
There are two incentives provided for those who join during this year-end campaign. The first is that membership is good for all of 2008. This means that those who join (or renew membership) now get more than a month of additional membership at no charge. The second incentive is a giveaway featuring eight valuable prizes: a trip to a ProZ.com conference in 2008, a new laptop, and six copies of SDL Trados.
If you are not yet a member, this is a very good time to become a full member of the industry's leading portal, and the world's largest community of translation professionals. Pursue your full potential in 2008!
Notes:
* The campaign ends December 19 - but it makes sense to take advantage of the campaign earlier, because the earlier you join, the longer the extended period of membership.
* The campaign applies not only to translators and interpreters, but also to translation companies and translation students. Membership options were created for both this year, and now ProZ.com is home to the fastest growing networks of both translation companies and translation students. Join now, and be part of the first "class" of members in each category!
(2) Be part of the initial 'class' of corporate members
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

A ProZ.com membership option was created earlier this year specifically for translation companies. A few months ago, there were about 100 corporate members. Now, with access to the Connect platform having been added to the suite of corporate services, the number of companies in the group is approaching 500. This makes ProZ.com the leading network of translation companies on the web.

Do you operate a translation company? The current year-end membership campaign is a great chance to join at a discounted rate -- it is even possible to apply your regular ProZ.com membership toward a further discount on the already deeply discounted membership fee. The campaign is also the last chance to be part of the corporate membership program from its first year.

By joining now, you also obtain an extended membership period that carries your company through all of 2008. During that period, ProZ.com staff members will be working with you and the rest of the group of ProZ.com corporate members to create new tools to help you run your business more efficiently, and to help you collaborate more effectively with other translation companies.

To take advantage of this offer and to join ProZ.com as a corporate member, go to: http://www.proz.com/campaign/corporate

(3) Know someone who would make a good ProZ.com member? Mention the campaign!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You are a paying ProZ.com member - thanks for making the site possible!
Please consider taking this campaign as an opportunity to pass along information concerning ProZ.com membership to colleagues whose work you know and respect.
In a survey last year, 92.9% of ProZ.com members reported that they would recommend membership to colleagues. Now is a great time to do that.
Remember, with each new member, the collective expertise of the ProZ.com community becomes greater--and this enhances the community's ability to collaborate, to attract clients, and to redefine the industry. So spread the word!
(4) New site design to move from 'beta' to default this week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As noted in this newsletter previously, in response to member requests, site staff members set out earlier this year to refresh the site design. The goal was to update the look and make the site slightly more appealing to new visitors. To that end, over the past six months a modified site design has been made available in stages for review by moderators, members, and finally all site users. During this beta period, many changes have been made based on user feedback. We would like to thank everyone for your help in improving the design!

Now, as a next step, the new design will be taken out of "beta" stage, and will become the default design for all site users and visitors. If you have not yet switched over to the new design, you will notice the change later this week.

The old design will continue to be supported for about six months, and registered users who wish to continue using the old design will be able to do so during this period. You can switch back to the old design by clicking "switch design" in the upper left.

Any additional feedback is welcome, and invited via the online support system at http;//www.proz.com/support

(5) Aix en Provence - congratulations to organizers John, Kathryn & Rebekka!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The regional conference held in Aix-en-Provence, France, went very well. Congratulations to organizers John Di Rico, Kathryn Strachecky and Rebekka Gross. Organizing an event like this is a lot of work, and this team did a tremendous job.
Member N.M. Eklund wrote, "...from the beginning of the conference there was a connection and goodwill which was heartwarming. Discussions with others during and after the conferences sessions were full of information and contacts. I was very happy to meet you all, and I will be sure to participate in upcoming ProZ.com conferences..."
Anne Fages said: "I was convinced this weekend would be very interesting professionally. I couldn't imagine this meeting would be so interesting on the personal and relational point of view. I met wonderful people..."
Eutychus added: "Thanks to all the organisers. How clever of you to arrange such good weather too. :) The challenge now is to process all the knowledge acquired before being snowed under again by the jobs in hand..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The ProZ.com regional conference in Dortmund is being held this weekend. If you are local, give it a look - spaces remain, so it is not too late to attend. There is a great lineup of speakers, and the event coincides with the annual Christmas market! See: http://www.proz.com/conference/13

(7) Fifth contest - 'Travel' - now in voting stage
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The fifth ProZ.com translation contest, organized under the theme "Travel", collected over 300 entries. Qualification round voting is now underway. To decide which entries make it to the final round of voting, go to: http://www.proz.com/contests
The following are the powwows already scheduled for the remainder of the year. If you don't see an event in your area, you can propose one starting at this page: http://www.proz.com/?sp=event/powwow_board&show_mode=propose
Katalin Horvath McClure added to the articles knowledgebase her original contribution, entitled "Currency Risk Mitigation 101 for Translators". If this is a topic relevant to you now, have a look at it here: http://www.proz.com/doc/1474
(10) The translation industry in Canada - a community article and a forum!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Do you know anything about the history of the translation industry in Canada? Know any notable Canadian translators? How about translation technology or products produced in Canada?

If your answer to any of the above questions is "yes", please share your knowledge for the benefit of the community! A community-authored article entitled "Translation Industry in Canada" has been created. Contributions have been made by six ProZ.com members so far, but several sections remain empty.

This effort is part of the "ProZwiki" project initiated by Samuel Murray at the end of last year, and advanced by a team of members this year. The ProZwiki is not yet open to the public, but members in Canada have been given access as part of the progression to an open compendium of knowledge for translators. If you are in Canada and you are a full paying member of ProZ.com, please check it out!

http://www.proz.com/prozwiki/history/en:Translation_Industry_in_Canada

Also, as a professional working in Canada, you may also want to see the new forum created specifically for discussion related to the translation industry in Canada: http://www.proz.com/topic/88484 A number of professionals have introduced themselves there already - you are invited to do the same! Member Damon Loomer in Halifax has taken on the job of moderating this new forum...
