型式検定とは、国際海事機構(IMO)や国際民間航空機関(ICAO)などの国際条約に
基づいて、人命安全や救難システムに用いる無線機器が遭難時の厳しい環境下で
も国際的に定められた能力を発揮できるか否かを判別する試験です。
法律としては、電波法３７条に定められています。

『電波法３７条』
次に掲げる無線設備の機器は、その型式について、総務大臣の行う検定に合格し
たものでなければ、施設してはならない。ただし、総務大臣が行う検定に相当す
る型式検定に合格している機器その他の機器であつて総務省令で定めるものを施

あるサイトでは、以下のような英訳になっていました。
The following radio equipment shall not be installed unless having passed the approval for the type conducted by the Minister.
