I need an English (UK) term for "Schildwirtschaft", a hospitality and accommodation business for travelers and their means of transportation in the late Middle Ages and early modern times. It is therefore considered a precursor to today’s rest areas, truck stops, and highway rest stops.

Was als Schildwirtschaft begonnen hat, wird bis zur endgültigen Fertigstellung zum Vorreiter für sanften Tourismus im Appenzellerland. Erste Belege bestätigen eine Schildwirtschaft im Zentrum des damaligen Weilers (= settlement).
