Portuguese term or phrase: conta
this is an excerpt of the description of a primary school mathematics activity.

I don't think account or sum are good options, as this is realy an activity dealing wiht stocastic and distribution.

"What's your calculation?" "What do you have?"
Explanation:
Em se tratando de uma conversa, eu não traduziria literalmente a palavra "conta". Eu perguntaria como está o trabalho de Maria para passar o sentido!

box(es)

Explanation:
I agree that you can't say "account" - these are primary school students, and they won't understand the word.

How many do you have in your boxes, Maria?
Pointing at Mónica's box(es)
We don't know how many boxes Mónica has, so I don't know whether it's singular or plural.

This is not about stochastics - it's just very basic arithmetic.

Asker: thank you. You are right. The activity is later expanded to study the probabilty of collors coming up... it is really interesting, as the children are very young.

How is your math?/How are you doing with your math?/How are you doing with your addition?

Explanation:
My suggestion.
I do like the idea of associating "conta" with the idea of doing your math, as it feels more natural. With that said, sum isn't so bad either, and it can be used for simple arithmetic as well and isn't restricted to more complex operations, which the children won't associate it with them either, of course. I have included one link from a website for children that uses sum as well, in case you wish to see it in such a context.
