Art/Literary - Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting / Etching
German term or phrase: Randeinfälle
Hello fellow translators,

I am translating a text about various German landscape painters for some art history education material and I'm struggling with this term. It appears mainly in the descriptions of paintings, e.g.:

[Name of painting] - sadly seeing the painting itself does not provide any further clues
Umrissradierung (Blatt mit zwei Randeinfälle)

It also appears in one part of the text to add some further context:

"Außerhalb der Darstellung gibt es mehrere Randeinfälle".

I assume these are some form of rough sketches/markings in the margin, outside the actual picture but I am weary of being too general here - is there perhaps a term for this in English?

remarques
Explanation:
From The British Museum

Description
Interior with two men, Lippert and Zingg conversing in the centre of the room; Chodowiecki is seated at a table in the background to right; first state with a remarque showing pastoral landscape with lettering on a boulder 'TRES FACIUNT COLEGIUM'. 1798
...
Elaborate remarques were added to the lower margins of the first plate and to all but the third of the four states of the second plate of 'Lippert and Zingg'.
...
Although other artists have made use of remarques, particularly in the nineteenth century, no-one either before or after Chodowiecki exploited the device in such an extended way. (For a general account of the use of remarques, including Chodowiecki's own, see Almut-Dorothee Jacobs' thesis, 'Der Randeinfall', Cologne 1974.)

Understanding art - What is a remarque?
...
The dictionary definition of the word originates from France and is detailed as ‘a mark in the margin of an engraved plate to indicate the stage of production of the plate’.

In the art world, a remarque edition differs slightly and is the name given to a limited-edition print that features a hand drawn original pencil sketch by the artist.

neutral  Helen Shiner: I think this is a very specialised term. It might apply here, but one would expect the term ‘Remarques’ (capitalised) to appear here in the text. These Randeinfälle seem to be more generalised. // Thanks, Alison

marginal notations / notations to the margin

Explanation:
Here is a highly respected art historian using the term ‘marginal ideas’: https://www.teeuwisse.de/catalogues/adolphe-martial-potemont... However, he is Dutch or German, I believe, so this may be an over literal translation of the term.

I am more familiar with the possibly more generic ‘marginal notations’ or more often ‘notation/s to the margin’. Here are some examples:
https://artmuseum.princeton.edu/collections/objects/134117

https://bid.eastbristol.co.uk/past-auctions/sreas10023/lot-d...

German is effectively saying they are ideas after the fact made to the margins. English does not stress the notion that they are ideas, just that they are notations.

The first text is referring to an etching, not a painting, by the way. I’m sure you know that - just a typo?

Ok, but do please be aware that I am also involved in the preparation of a catalogue raisonné of prints, so have specialised knowledge here. Will leave it with you.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you so much for your help - 'remarque' seems more appropriate for my particular translation but these suggestions would certainly still work.

neutral  philgoddard: I respect your specialist knowledge a great deal, but I do believe Alison is right here. It's a drawing on a print.
2 hrs
-> Could be any drawing, Phil. Maybe not what is termed a Remark or Remarque in German (why is this term not used? Why is it not termed a Remarkdruck?) Hence my quibble with Alison’s answer. Not all drawings on prints are remarques.
