While the discussion from all contributors was most interesting, I have since found several Canadian links to "citizen schools" in the sense of schools with a focus on social values and a more community focus. I am very familiar with the target audience and schools in question in this case, and it is NOT a matter of illiterate parents or more disadvantaged neighbourhoods. These are schools across the board (francophone school division) that want to encourage students skills such as respectful listening, tolerance...and incorporate them into the "regular" curriculum. I still don't really like "citizen school" and have chosen to work in "citizenship education" wherever possible instead. Many thanks to everyone who took part in this dialogue. I wish I could divvy up the points among you!

I agree that "civic school" doesn't really work, but I think you should still incorporate this word somehow.

"Civically minded" would be another possibility.

One of Marco's links explains it : http://bv.cdeacf.ca/documents/PDF/rayonalpha/mondealpha/ma20... ... Quite clearly, this is about families who are said to constitute un problème social (not sure we've been able to get away with that kind of language in the Anglo world for many years now!)

The idea is that the adults also have to be educated, including in terms of literacy. And also, apparently, numeracy, hence the beginning of the phrase, concerning a "kit about financial literacy".

I've put "holistic" not because that is the ideal jargon, but because, at least in the Anglo world, in 2021, the question boils down to choosing the right euphemism. Something like "stakeholders" could fulfil the same function, meaning "not just kids".

Asker: While I am very familiar with Termium and agree that "citizenship education" is quite acceptable, I am more concerned with what to call the type of school promoting this approach. I'm not happy with "citizenship (or civic) school" and prefer something like "community-based" or even "community-minded" school...

Asker: Thanks, Jessica! I've started looking into what defines a "citizen school" and I think you're right. It has definitely become an accepted term (versus a translation of something used in France or Spain), at least in the US. This article pretty much sums up the approach used by the authors of the document I'm working on.

neutral  Mpoma: Guesswork. And woolly. This link [http://bv.cdeacf.ca/documents/PDF/rayonalpha/mondealpha/ma20... ] tells you exactly what we're talking about: parents who are sufficiently illiterate for it to be a educational problem. It's a Canadian euphemism.

My experience is coming mainly from the U.S. definitions. Since you said civics is not an acceptable term, I could also suggest " Social and Cultural Integration" as a possibility since the Francophone world emphasises more cultural assimilation in their educational systems. Hope this helps.
