A técnica de regeneração tecidual guiada (RTG) é fundamentada na utilização de uma barreira física para impedir que células provenientes dos tecidos gengivais entrem em contato com a superfície radicular tratada. Essa separação permite a proliferação das células provenientes do ligamento periodontal remanescente e do endósteo adjacente para regeneração completa do suporte periodontal: ligamento periodontal, cemento radicular e osso alveolar. Estas células são capazes de se diferenciarem em cementoblastos, osteoblastos e fibroblastos, desenvolvendo o processo de regeneração.
