Guess what! I delivered this job with a comment because of the deadline. When I received your ingenious answer, this became very clear. I immediately emailed my LSP who is in Europe (after hours at that time) hoping to intercept the final delivery to the client. This morning, I got an email from her admitting that the original dead pdf had the correct spelling. Apparently, they OCRed it and didn't cross-check with the source. I didn't have the original.
