Un estudio sobre la comprensión lectora en un idioma extranjero de distintos grupos de estudiantes dice lo siguiente:

"Davis (1989) had three groups of intermediate university students of FL French read a 936-word authentic literary extract under three different conditions: read the text, then write an L1 summary, then read the text again; study a comment guide with questions and some vocabulary definitions before reading; read the text with the same questions and definitions as glosses while reading. In terms of pausal units, the latter two groups scored more than double the read-write-read group, and the glossed group achieved the highest average scores. In other words, supplements such as pre-questions and glosses seem to help comprehension."

¿Alguna idea de lo que puede significar "pausal units"?

En el texto sí, salvo que se trate de una errata (que en un principio fue mi opinión). Decidí publicar el término por si acaso alguien tiene alguna respuesta, de lo contrario creo que probablemente sea una errata.

No sé si habrá una terminología establecida. Yo diría algo como "unidades de lectura pausada" (en tanto que los estudiantes pueden detener su lectura, mirar términos en el glosario, consultar lo que sea) y seguir leyendo... "sin prisa pero sin pausa..." digo, con prisa, pero con pausas.

Un poco lo de "vísteme despacio que tengo prisa".

Al traducir un tema especializado, o incluso una conferencia de las que yo traduzco asiduamente, lo primero que hago yo ahora es verificar la traducción del glosario, y familiarizarme plenamente con toda la nomenclatura del tema. Una vez que me siento cómodo con esta terminología, traducir es coser y cantar.

Lo mismo con los estudiantes... si quieres leer a Góngora o a Quevedo, sin un buen glosario, o sin haberte empollado el Tesoro de Covarrubias (Diccionario del español de entonces)... vas a tener problemas de comprensión...

The student's improvement is measured by using "pausal units" A pausal unit is a measure of phrase breaks that naturally occur in the sentence where a fluent adult reader normally pauses when reading the text. When a student retells a story accurately, the pausal units will more likely match those found when an adult reads the story aloud. A high pausal unit count reflects high performance on the memory task of retelling the story.

Our data analysis was based on the student’s performance in multiple choice questions and in text recall in CSL,
which were videotaped and then transcribed by two researchers who were fluent in CSL. Following, we
analysed student’s recalls using pausal units. A pausal unit stands for the phrase break which occurs when a
reader briefly stops reading in order to take a breath.

For the type of information recalled, the relationships between anxiety and recall were less systematic. Reading anxiety affected the number of important (“High”) pausal units recalled, whereas foreign language classroom anxiety affected the number of supporting (“Mid”) pausal units recalled. In both cases, highly anxious learners recalled fewer pausal units. In contrast, neither reading anxiety nor foreign language classroom anxiety affected significantly the recall of unimportant (“Low”) pausal units. Results from the analysis of data from the Cognitive Interference Questionnaire indicated that highly anxious students tended to experience more off-task, interfering thoughts than their less-anxious counterparts
