I have called this an initial assumption but I'm not totally sure if there's a better option. Suggestions appreciated. Many thanks

La Arqueología es una ciencia de investigación histórica que utiliza un método científico
para investigar y obtener un conocimiento que pasa a formar parte de la Historia.
Por tanto, no es una ciencia auxiliar de la Historia, sino una ciencia histórica porque es a la vez fuente para la Historia y una forma de hacer historia (Bendala, 1981).
Es una ciencia horizontal que sirve para hacer historia, cualquier clase de historia, de cualquier época, en cualquier medio y con distintos procedimientos (Querol y Martínez, 1996).
El arqueólogo es ante todo un historiador, un historiador especializado en el estudio de las fuentes materiales y de sus técnicas específicas, aunque conoce y aprovecha las demás fuentes –escritas, verbales, visuales–.
Su objetivo último es ampliar el conocimiento para hacer historia.
Toda investigación arqueológica comienza con el planteamiento de unos objetivos científicos y una hipótesis de partida para elaborar un proyecto.
Éste se nutre de distintas fuentes, utiliza un procedimiento, unos métodos y unas técnicas para verificar o no la hipótesis de partida.
