W przypadku rezerwy jawnej tor zasilania rezerwowego (linia lub transformator) w warunkach normalnej pracy nie przenosi żadnego obciążenia i zostaje załączony dopiero w przypadku zaniku lub nadmiernego obniżenia się napięcia w torze podstawowym, przejmując całe obciążenie.
W przypadku rezerwy ukrytej dwa niedociążone źródła zasilania (linie lub transformatory) zasilają wyznaczone sekcje rozdzielni. W przypadku zaniku lub nadmiernego obniżenia się napięcia w jednym z nich następuje otwarcie jego wyłącznika, zamknięcie wyłącznika sprzęgłowego i dwie sekcje rozdzielni zostają zasilone z jednego źródła (które wtedy zostaje dociążone lub nieznacznie przeciążone).
W przypadku rezerwy ukrytej dwa niedociążone źródła zasilania (linie lub transformatory) zasilają wyznaczone sekcje rozdzielni. W przypadku zaniku lub nadmiernego obniżenia się napięcia w jednym z nich następuje otwarcie jego wyłącznika, zamknięcie wyłącznika sprzęgłowego i dwie sekcje rozdzielni zostają zasilone z jednego źródła (które wtedy zostaje dociążone lub nieznacznie przeciążone).

The spinning reserve is the extra generating capacity that is available by increasing the power output of generators that are already connected to the power system. For most generators, this increase in power output is achieved by increasing the torque applied to the turbine's rotor.
The non-spinning reserve or supplemental reserve is the extra generating capacity that is not currently connected to the system but can be brought online after a short delay. In isolated power systems, this typically equates to the power available from fast-start generators.

For example, if the current load on the grid was 10000 MW and the sum of the capacity of all the generators connected to the grid was 11000 MW, then there would effectively be 10% available capacity for an increase in load that was running ("spinning"). This would mean that some of the generators were not operating at their rated output and their difference in output was available "in reserve".
