As far as I know, I haven't been a victim yet, but the risk is there even if I have taken some precautions. Of course, over the years I have come across some attempts of fraud. Quite recently I suspected early on that a potential job was a fraud (too good to be true) and all communication was immediately cut off.

I was caught out once at the beginning of my career but I have received emails which could be considered fraud. Spanish agencies have asked me to complete a test translation "by a certain date" several times. It was obvious that they were trying to have work done for free,

Ditto what ventnai said. I don't recall ever having been the victim of fraud, but I have had occasionally dodgy e-mails or approaches. Just the other day, I clicked on some pop-up survey on a translator forum (I don't recall which one, there are so many) which claimed it wanted to thank me by giving me a brand-new smartphone for the nominal price of one euro. Although I don't use smart phones (I already have one, which I was inveigled into signing up for, and am unable to return, but I don't use... See more Ditto what ventnai said. An obvious scammer so I played along, not touching the translation until the promised cheque came. The amount was $3,000 higher than quoted, and the bank tellers told me it was fake (as expected). That's it, actually, that one time.

As others said, I have never been a victim (I don't think the non-payment issues I have had were intentional enough to qualify for fraud), difficult to tell how many of the offers I refused (in some cases, because they seemed fishy) may have been fraud. It may also be because the most common fraud schemes involve cheques, which are not commonly used in my country.
But I have seen a few things, yes...
