I vaguely remember some sort of similar scenario, but don't recall the details. It certainly isn't an everyday occurrence.
In over 40 years of full-time work experience, I’m sure it happened at least once, probably more…

I have been asked to translate a document that I had already translated--once by the same client. I showed them the translation I had already done and they actually paid me twice. I guess it was too complicated to cancel the job and return the allocated funds.

from two completely different countries.
The document came from the German government and the agency was in China, and the other in Spain.
I did not take on the job because it was not my field, but I was a bit irritated that Governments do not keep their own money in their own country though.

I think, it could happen in legal translation. For an example, the website of the Ministry of Industry in my country does not provide industrial regulation in English. It is other party's responsible to translate the regulation into their target language.
Ah, I just remembered that another circumstance also could happen if the document is partial like in manual and the delivery is not in same time. The same happened to me. My client didn't pay twice but he was extremely happy...

An end client sent a same source to 2 different agencies and both sent it to me. It was a transcreation pilot for an advertisement campaign.
As I worked for one of them (who paid me better), I explained the situation to the other agency and said I could not take both jobs. As end client seemed to be trying different vendors, I saw no meaning working on both... I haven't been asked to quote on exactly the same document, but I have been asked to translate documents in the same legal proceedings by different clients.

It happened once. I translated a document for one client and some time later part of that same document was an attachment to another document of a totally different client.
Now I'm not considering standards, laws, regulations and standard forms that are regularly present in several documents, and I don't have to translate them again because they are already in my TM. This happens all the time.
It was a long document about a small country's industries etc., obviously commissioned by their government.
Two different agencies asked me to quote and I got one of the translations.
I find this question much more interesting if you take it as a euphemism

Thank you, that is funny.
Now that I think about it...once | Jun 23, 2017 |
It was a transcription task. Both men used to work in the same company, but one of them had decided to work on his own. My surprise? The first task he offered me was exactly the same his company was offering me one hour later.
