I have to change the formatting of a paper to CMS and I have a simple question (I don't have the CMS handy, obviosly).

How do I cite multiple pages by a single author in the text (not in the bibliography)?

For example, let's say I want to cite Smith's 1997 book, pages 1 and 2 in reference to a certain definition:

The word "chicken" is commonly thought to mean "poultry" (Smith 1997, 1, 2)

That looks strange! Any of you guys know how it should b

This might help. Feb 4, 2011

You'd want to see 15.7 "Basic structure of an in-text citation" in the 16th edition.
You can get a 30-day free trial to see this information on line at https://press-booksweb.uchicago.edu/CMS/FreeTrial.aspx

I believe that then you use "pp." (pages), e.g. pp. 1, 3, 6.

p. - for single page
pp. - for multiple individual pages (e.g. pp. 1, 3, 6)
pp. can be omitted for page ranges (e.g. pp. 1-8, pp. 1-23, pp. 156-9, pp. 238-42)

No <pp> in CMS Feb 7, 2011

I don't think CMS uses pp or p... If I understand correctly, pages are seperated by the year only be a comma.
