Description

Key features of legal discourse include terminology and phraseology which is why they are considered central in legal translation.

Of particular concern is the equivalence between legal terms across legal cultures which is why translators in this particular area of expertise need systemic knowledge of the legal systems in the two language pairs they are translating from and to. Legal language is tied to a national legal system and its translation should fulfil a communicative purpose just as any other translation. In addition, the knowledge structures underlying different legal systems are diverse at a national level and as such, they reflect culture-bound issues and international legal concepts which have been adapted to fit common frameworks.

This training session includes practical instructions regarding the translation of various legal documents, such as certificates, contracts, court documents (affidavits, decisions, verdicts, decrees, etc.), degrees, diplomas and diploma supplements. In addition, the session will provide last-minute solutions regarding problematic issues such as illegible text, handwritten text, signatures, stamps, seals and similar content in documents.

The aim is to present to both translation professionals as well as beginners how legal documents are structured, what kind of text can be expected in such documents, what problematic issues they may pose and how to handle them.

Bio: Jasmina is an Assistant Professor with a PhD in Applied Linguistics (English Language) and an appointed and sworn translator, native in German and Serbian as well as close-to-native in English. She has taught Legal English, Translation Techniques, Consecutive Translation, Culture in Business Communication at the BA level and Intercultural Communication and Translation as well as Consecutive and Conference Interpreting at the MA level. Parallel to her academic career, she has been developing her translator and interpreter career for the last 23 years. Now she is trying to contribute to the profession by coaching students to become good translators, interpreters or teachers. She has written many articles and a few books, two of the most important ones being “Translation in Practice – Written and Consecutive” and "Scientific, Professional and Official Translation", which consists of two volumes, one is a theoretical overview and the other is a workbook. Her primary objective is to offer valid and tested teaching/ learning techniques for students training to be translators and interpreters. Jasmina's extensive and elaborate academic and professional record shows highly developed standards needed in the translation and interpreting business.
