According to Hans Tietgens and other older exponents of the history
of adult education, there was no adult education, due to the dictatorial, national socialist system. According to this influential view, adult education is based on the principle of voluntary learning and the Enlightenment. With this abecedarian nitpicking, a secure terrain for the democratic tradition of education was established, but the fact that further qualification training and organised leisure activities were offered and accepted in the national socialist system of governance, is not able to be justified. And the con- nection between romantic and quasi-religious ideas of adult education, as propagated by groups from the right and left political spectrum as forerun- ners of national socialism, or the continued employment of so-called Aryan and politically unassuming instructors in the post 1933 newly established National Socialist public education institutions does not allow for clarifica- tion. For the period of National Socialist rule, as regards continuing educa- tion institutions, and especially the VHS, there is a research gap.
