Il ne s'agit pas d'un "bleed" (fond perdu). Une encre saignante (bleeding ink) apparaît à travers le papier, par transpercement. Le numéro d'identification (ou foliotage, dans le cas de la numérotation des feuilles d'un document) semble présent d'origine dans le papier, comme un filigrane. D'où le faux filigrane. Encre de sécurité contenant des colorants qui, sous l'action d'un solvant, imprègnent le support papier ("saignent autour de la partie imprimée ou à travers le support") de manière à ce que toute tentative d'effacement mécanique cause des dommages visibles au document. Bleed through numbering can be used on the MICR and/or arabic numbering. Bleed through numbering is printed in ink (or with a ribbon) that contains a red dye.
