Description | MSc (12 mth FT)/Diploma (9 mth FT) The programme consists of two strands practical translation and theoretical perspectives pursued in parallel by all students. Its aim is to provide students with an advanced perspective on the discipline of Translation Studies and to enhance practical translation skills. The theoretical perspectives strand consists of two theory courses (Translation Studies I: Methodology; first term; Translation Studies II: Themes and Issues, second term) and an introductory course in applied linguistics (first term), covering related areas of interest (discourse, stylistics, semantics). The programme is taught through a combination of lectures, seminars, and exercises in practical translation, in conjunction with guest lectures and group tutorials. The practical stream consists of portfolio of translation exercises. The following languages are currently available: Arabic, Chinese, Danish, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish (Portuguese and Spanish are available only as MSc by research) and Swedish. The practical strand is designed to complement the aspects of translation discussed concurrently in the theoretical perspectives strand. Candidates must be graduates, normally in possession of a good first degree, with a research interest in translation, or having professional experience in translation or another relevant field. Contact: Graduate School of Asian and Modern European languages It is possible the Literarture Department will be covering some of this in 2005.
