When I try to open files in TagEditor, I always get the following message:

Unknown error when reading plug-in filter management file C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SDL International\Filters\PluginFileFilterDefinitions.xml

I use SDL Trados 2007 on Windows XP SP2 and Microsoft Office 2003 SP2

Could anybody provide help?

Which files? Jul 19, 2007

What type of files are you trying to open in TagEditor?

Have you tried this workaround?

I'm trying to open the HTML-files with INI-file inserted into the tag settings.

Davor

SOLUTION FOUND: Change installation order Oct 26, 2007

OS -> Office -> MultiTerm 2007 -> Trados 2007

MultiTerm 2007 seems to nuke the needed files

Jussi is correct! And Repair in Control panel fixes this Nov 15, 2007

Hi there,
Actually a Repair from the Control Panel/Uninstall software also works fine. Even with Vista and Trados 2007 8.0. At least it did wonders for me!

Just a question Feb 12, 2008

Does it mean that I should uninstall everything and install it again?

Yes, the installation must be done from scratch Feb 13, 2008

Unfortunately yes.

(To be exact, you don't need to reinstall operating system, and probably not even Office)

Good luck,

Just use Repair Feb 13, 2008

In my case, it was not necessary.
It was enough to use the Repair function from the Control Panel, as Tomás wrote.

I am not even allowed to use the repair option Jun 22, 2008

For some inexplicable reason, when attempting to repair my installation of Multiterm, a fatal error occurs due to the requirement of "Internet Explorer 5 or a superior version". Now, I have IE 7, as is included with Vista. Similarly, I cannot install SDL phrasefinder as it tells me I need "Windows 2000 or superior".

What is it this time? Another Vista bug? Another SDL bug? Both?

Plus, I cannot reinstall from the file I downloaded from the SDL website since it reminds me that "Multiterm 2007 has been succesfully installed".

There are enough bugs in these programs combined to feed the global aardvark population for the extent of a geological age.

Implausibly solved Jun 23, 2008

So: this is how I got through it: instead of repairing Multiterm, which had caused the problem, or uninstalling either program, I chose to repair Trados and, magic! it worked.

One bug less in the mound. Still a bountiful scenery for hungry aardvarks.

Hello Davor,

Please locate your filter definitions file. By default it's located in:

Hello Davor,

Please locate your filter definitions file. By default it's located in:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SDL International\Filters.

If you cannot locate this directory then your filter folders have been deleted and need to be replaced, which requires you to repair SDL Trados 2007 SP2.

Otherwise, locate the file called PluginFileFilterDefinitions.xml and confirm that it is there. Make a copy of this file path, including the file name. By default this is:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SDL International\Filters\PluginFileFilterDefinitions.xml

The following steps describe how to open the Windows Registry Editor and make the necessary changes:

*The use of the Windows Registry Editor at your own risk. Any unwanted changes may harm your software and cannot be made undone*

1. Close all SDL Trados applications on your machine
2. Go to Start > Run
3. Type regedit
4. Press OK; the Windows Registry Editor should open
5. Go to the key My Computer > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Trados > Shared > PlugIns and select the key FileFilters.
6. In the right pane you will see FilterDefinitionsFilePath
7. Right click on this name and select Modify from the short menu
8. Under Value Data type in the path and file name you found earlier (by default C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\SDL International\Filters\PluginFileFilterDefinitions.xml)
9. Press OK and close the Windows Registry Editor

This should fix the error.

I hope this helps.

Many Thanks,

Gareth Powell

Error reading PluginFileFilterDefinitions.xml with SDL Trados 7.5.0 on XP SP3 Oct 24, 2008

None of the suggested solutions helps. New installations of Windows XP SP3 (an earlier version tested, too) and SDL are used. Another PC has no such problem.

NOW TAGETDITOR CANNOT OPEN ANY FILES!
Searching on the net I discovered (here) that this is still due to the MT reinstallation!!

As far as I know SDL Trados is the only investment with negative ROI on the market.

I will definitely switch to some other CAT in the near future.
