Is it a good practice to answer on a reference request the following:
Please be advised, that due to non disclosure agreements and the general code of ethics of translation trade, the identity of my customers is confidential, thus not available even upon request?

Of course, when there is reason to believe that an outsourcer is not requesting references merely with the intent of client snatching, I direct them to my public NDA at:

EU framework-contracts Apr 24, 2010

The EU asks for specific references (number of pages, field and level of specialisation) when you reply directly to any call for tenders and agencies who participate ask them when they want to include you in their list of subcontractors.

I ask my customers for references. So far no client of mine ever refused to write a letter with the requested information!

Please do not generalize Apr 26, 2010

First, many colleagues (including Oleg Delendyk, the author of this poll) have mentioned confidentiality, NDAs, etc. etc. I always ask a client for a permission before mentioning him on my list of references; in such situation, no NDA is broken.

Second, client snatching is only possible when we are talking about agencies. I most;ly work for direct clients, so I cannot see how bank A would steal bank B, or information security company X would steal Y, another company in the same sect

I most;ly work for direct clients, so I cannot see how bank A would steal bank B, or information security company X would steal Y, another company in the same sector, as my translation or interpreting client.

Third, it seems that people keep thinking about translations. although the poll itself is not limited to translators (Oleg, please correct me if I am wrong). In specialized interpreting, it is rarely possible to provide a sample (although I do have permissions from some clients for using recordings from their events).

All in all, in my situation (mostly interpreting assignments, mostly in several specialized fields, mostly for direct clients, with rates above the average market) references have been quite effective sometimes.

Dear Colleagues! Nov 30, 2010

I have been asked so many times to give references and Thank you for all this infromation and suggestions to avoid this problem. I did even think to have one of my jobs signed by the client personally for a permanent reference)))))
