structure / composition / mold / outline Explanation: Everything which gets closer to the 'semiotic' idea of a text, i.e. an extended structure of syntactic units, endowed with its 'grammar', rules, functions, etc.. See here http://www.domusweb.it/it/magazine/920/ |

texture Explanation: Hi Lorraine, usually in architecture, we talk about "fabric", also in urban context, but, to my humble opinion, here we are talking more about the texture. What do you think? |

polymateic "narrative" /pattern Explanation: Pure U of C at Berkeley! :)) Why not though? "The caves unfold in a most variagated polimateric narrative"... tres cool, mon petit bebè !!! as for "pattern" "text" is rendered as either "mold" or "development" (again, in the sense of "unfolding"). However, in recent 20 years the postmodernist theorists (especially at the acme of the Californian brand of politcorrectness) started referring to any material – whether composite or not – as "text". Even to the trees! So, if you wanna dare... just leave it as "text". I wouldn't! :))) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 5 hrs (2012-06-16 20:57:10 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- polymateRic, naturally! Sorry: de pingerpoken nicht gut! |

environment Explanation: 'testo' I would rather interpret as 'contesto', 'ambiente', therefore 'an environment made of several different materials'. to sum up an heterogeneous structure/materials of caves' fabric/surface. 'fabric', your solution, is also good! Check also if in some contexts they might refer to 'pebbles mosaics'. |
