Mainly on what they are doing and how much noise it involves. I don't need total silence and I do like to know other people are around for when I feel like a break. I can always shut the door if things are really getting hairy.

In general, I find people being around while I'm supposed to be working a distraction. However, it depends who we are talking about. I have one friend/colleague who is usually either working or studying too when she comes to visit, so she can do that in the guest room or anywhere else really and we don't get in each other's way. Then I have other friends or colleagues who come because they want to interact socially, so they tend to interrupt my work to a greater extent, but most of the people who know me also know that I'm likely to be working at any given time and try to respect the fact. Hardly anyone ever drops in unannounced, and even when family or friends on holiday come to stay, they make the same allowances. ▲ Collapse | | | Julian Holmes Япония Local time: 08:47 Член ProZ.com c 2011 японский => английский
Absolutely not I need the peace and quiet of my own private space, with the emphasis on private. Sorry, but I'm a total grouse if people are even in the same room as me when I'm trying to get things done and they are an obstacle to my tunnel vision. Grrrrr @Michael Exactly. If friends are around, why would you be working anyway? Corrected funny typo ("room" not "toom", sounds like "tomb" quite apt) Also, added last line. ... but to be perfectly honest, I do not work when "friends" are here. No point really!

Draft quality only! | Jul 1, 2013 |
It's the old Feng Shui thing... there is nothing more futile than trying to concentrate fully when someone is sitting behind you trying to be quiet! Just about acceptable for a first draft, but when I am doing the final draft "I vont to be alone" as someone once said... Steve K. | | | I, too, Vont to be alone | Jul 1, 2013 |
Can't be listening to people chatting and ignore it - too difficult! Children playing in another room is fine, but actual words that have meaning - no, can't do it, I have to listen to the words, and then I want to join in the conversation! Not that this is a situation that often happens in the lonely life of a translator, I suspect....... | | | Julian Holmes Япония Local time: 08:47 Член ProZ.com c 2011 японский => английский
Steve K. wrote: It's the old Feng Shui thing... there is nothing more futile than trying to concentrate fully when someone is sitting behind you trying to be quiet! Steve K. Nice one, Steve! Quality is pushed aside and takes second place if there is 1 too many person in the room. "Daft" quality results. I don't Vont that! Julian H. | | | Other/it depends | Jul 1, 2013 |
... on what they are doing. If the are talking (to me or not), or doing everything else, I may get distracted, while if they are around me and silent I generally cope well. However, to be sure, I work better when I am alone.

Before my daughter started walking, I used to be able to work with her in the same room (we had a baby corner set up in my office back then). When she started getting into everything and developing her screeching voice, that all changed! My home office occupies half of my 2-bedroom apartment (which I own). When I work, it's a no-kids, no-relatives, no-friends, no-visitors zone. Like Lori, I need time and space to concentrate. However, silence is not always required if I am doing some quasi mechanical thing, like copying and pasting format tags, converting files, downloading assets or answering ordinary emails. | | | People and noise aren't the issue... | Jul 1, 2013 |
I can work just fine with people around, after working in-house, I actually prefer it. My problem comes from distractions in my computer, like email and proz forums (darn you all!). When I really need to focus I go to the library, a coffee shop or sometimes even a church. It's amazing how productive I become when I don't have internet access. | | | Страниц в теме: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: Can you focus on your work when other people (friends, family, etc) are around?
