A job Dec 19, 2012

Maybe because of age
Maybe because many interests are raising in this period (seems a contraddiction but it isn't)

but translation is a job to me.

The attitude has changed in time.
When I was 25 it was more a mission than a job.

Today I am experiencing more possibilities of mixing translation with other expressive means. And I can "see" other than that.

Pros and cons of digitalization and networking, perhaps.

Proz has contributed to change my attitudes, for example.

A profession Dec 19, 2012

Because I take pride in what I do, something I can't do with just "jobs."
A profession requires expertise, while anyone can do "jobs".

Suppose I'll answer "Other - N/A".

So, on that basis, let's say I consider translation an art as well as part of my job. It's simply what I do.

Unfortunately, the notion of translation as an "industry" or "business" or even a "tool" seems to be increasingly accepted as a given.

The art of Translation Dec 19, 2012

Not everyone has the ability to convey the meaning of a text in another language. So, I'd say it is an art, and a difficult one.

All, except a job Dec 19, 2012

I echo Julian's comments regarding translation as a mere job, but there are times when I agree with all the other options. Depends on what and for whom I'm translating and under what terms and conditions. I have certainly experienced boredom and nightmare, as well as art and a sense of mission.

to me translating is Dec 19, 2012

to me translating is a pleasure when I convey the meaning of what is written in a foreign language to my native one so that natives can read and benefit from it is something like helping giving birth a new NATIVE TEXT

Bad? Black? Dec 19, 2012

Most of the answers make me feel a black sheep, an old unsatisfied translator but I am not!

After all my job (profession, yes, it is better) is my passion. No doubts.

An art Dec 19, 2012

To me, translation is an art and a job at the same time. Based on it, I meet interesting people and find new challenges almost every day.
