Source text - English The West Wind rustled the leaves of the Last Forest. ‘They come! They come! Be warned!’
The sound moved from branch to branch, with the susurration of the leaves. The West Wind whispered in knothole and bole, not so much a language, as a knowledge as old as time. It was the Knowing of the Forest, ages old.
The winds travelled where they would, and when they would – the messenger of nature. Untamed, unbound, forever free. The winds touched the sky and caressed the land, and none was their master.
The winds brought the songs and tales of lands afar; the seas and the creatures of the world and the news, for those who would and could listen. Many did not. Those who believed they controlled the land did not listen, would not hear the ancient stories, the lore and legend. Those who would listen not, would learn not, and care not. The winds brought news of their beginning and their ending.
As the sun climbed the warning spread, and the creaking of branches took the sound from tree to tree. ‘They come! They come!’
‘I stand with you’ cried the West Wind, ‘Join me, my sisters!’ She was beguiled with sadness, whipping the leaves and making the twigs dance. The West Wind was wise, for she had seen much of good and bad.
The Great Oak creaked, her trunk hollow bass-fluted and her leaves rustled a tune – a call to arms. The primal melody grew as another tree took it, then another. ‘They come!’
Translation - Portuguese A Ventania do Oeste rumorejava pelas folhas da Última Floresta. “Eles vêm! Eles vêm! Estejam avisados!”
O som movia-se de ramo em ramo, com o sussurrar das folhas. A Ventania do Oeste murmurava nos buracos dos troncos, não tanto uma linguagem, mas um conhecimento tão antigo quanto o próprio tempo. Era o Saber da Floresta, de eras passadas.
Os ventos viajavam onde queriam, e para onde queriam – o mensageiro da natureza. Indomáveis, sem amarras, para sempre livres. Os ventos tocavam o céu e acariciavam a terra, e nenhum deles era seu mestre.
Os ventos traziam as canções e contos de terras distantes; os mares e as criaturas do mundo e as novas, para quem pudesse e quisesse ouvir. Muitos não queriam. Aqueles que acreditavam controlar a terra não davam ouvido, não escutando as histórias antigas, o mito e a lenda. Quem não o faz, não aprende, e não dá importância. Os ventos traziam notícias de seu início e de seu fim.
Enquanto o sol subia o aviso difundia-se, e o ranger dos galhos portava consigo o som de árvore em árvore. “Eles vêm! Eles vêm!”
“Estou do seu lado”, chorava a Ventania do Oeste, “Juntem-se a mim, minhas irmãs!.” Ela, cheia de tristeza, balançava as folhas e fazia os galhos dançarem. A Ventania do Oeste era sábia, pois ela havia visto bastante do bem e do mal.
A Grande Árvore de Carvalho rangia, seu tronco emitia um oco flautear grave e suas folhas sussurravam uma música – um chamado á luta. A primitiva melodia crescia ao momento que outra árvore se unia ao coro, e outra ainda. “Eles vêm!”
