4.1 Air masses and general air circulation
4.1.1 Planetary scale systems
Planetary scale systems are atmospheric phenomena which last from several days to weeks, extending over several thousand kilometers.
Weather systems do not occur randomly. There is a pattern to the nature of weather systems in different parts of the world, and although the air flow at altitudes where most flights occur varies from day-to-day, clear characteristics can be seen in different regions over a long time period. The forces driving this circulation come from the different amounts of solar radiation that are absorbed at different latitudes. Whilst energy is absorbed in tropical regions there is a net loss at the poles. This, inevitably, leads to warm tropics and cold polar regions. However, the Poles would be much colder and the tropics much warmer if the atmosphere did not flow to move the warm air from the tropics towards the poles and the cold air in the opposite direction. The global circulation of air acts to reduce the heat difference between the equator and the poles.
As the Earth does continue to rotate at a constant rate, and the winds do continue, the transfer of momentum between Earth/atmosphere/Earth must be in balance. (The atmosphere is rotating in the same direction as the Earth but westerly winds move faster and easterly winds move slower than the Earth's surface)
It is convenient to divide the atmosphere in each hemisphere into three latitude bands since each band has its own characteristics.
Tropics: Convergence, rising motion and considerable cloud development are the result of strong surface heating in the equatorial region. At lower levels air converges from both the northern and the southern hemisphere into a region known as the inter-tropical- convergence-zone (ITCZ). As it is linked to the warmest tropical region the ITCZ moves with the seasons to about 10° to 20° north of the equator in July and 10° to 20° south of the equator in January. It is dominated by the lifting of humid air and areas with little or no surface wind, the doldrums, can be found here.
Between the equator and 30°, the circulation is dominated by the warm air rising near the equator, moving towards either pole and cooling in the upper troposphere before sinking at around 30° and moving back towards the equator at lower levels. Since the Earth is rotating, air moving in the northern hemisphere experiences a deviation to the right as it moves due to the Coriolis effect. This means that the main wind direction at upper levels is not from south to north but from south-west to north-east. At lower levels the air moves from north-east to south west - the so-called “trade winds”.
At around 30° the sinking air, in which clouds and precipitation do not form, creates the region described as the sub-tropical anticyclone belt.
Mid-latitudes: Between 30° and 60° the circulation is significantly different. The boundary between the cold polar air and the warm tropical air is the polar front, normally situated at around 60°, but moving seasonally. South of the polar front the predominant surface winds are from the south-west and north of the polar front they are from the north- east. In the low pressure systems along the polar front cold air flows the western side while on their eastern flank warm air is carried northwards. At upper levels along the polar front line the flow meanders north and south, but is predominantly from west to east in the jet streams.
Polar regions: Within 30° of the polar cap the air circulation is primarily away from the poles at low levels and towards the poles at upper levels. Circulations in this region are not as important as in the other regions because the area of this region is small compared with the others.
The broad and very deep band of fast-moving westerlies in the westerly wind belt, centered around 45°S (but interrupted at intervals by migrating cyclones moving east but not shown in the schematic above) lose momentum to the Earth through surface friction. The equatorial easterlies or trade winds, and to a lesser extent the polar easterlies, gain momentum from the Earth's surface. That gain in momentum is transferred, to maintain the westerlies, via large atmospheric eddies and waves - the sub-tropical high and the sub-polar low belts.
This eddies and waves are also a part of the mechanism by which excess insolation heat energy is transferred from the low to the higher latitudes.
The Trades form under the Hadley circulation cell and are part of the return flow for this cell. It was these winds that early mariners relied upon to propel their ships from Europe to North and South America. Their name derives from the Middle High German trade, akin to Old English trod meaning "path" or "track", and thus the phrase "the wind blows trade”, that is to say, on track.
The Westerlies, which can be found at the mid-latitudes beneath the Ferrel circulation cell likewise arise from the tendency of winds to move in a curved path on a rotating planet. Together with the airflow in the Ferrel cell, pole ward at ground level and tending to equator ward aloft (though not clearly defined, particularly in the winter), this predisposes the formation of eddy currents which maintain a more-or-less continuous flow of westerly air. The upper-level polar jet stream assists by providing a path of least resistance under which low pressure areas may travel.
The Polar Easterlies result from the outflow of the Polar high, a permanent body of descending cold air which makes up the pole ward end of the Polar circulation cell. These winds, though persistent, are not deep. However, they are cool and strong, and can combine with warm, moist Gulf Stream air transported northward by weather systems to produce violent thunderstorms and tornadoes far as 60°N on the North American continent.
Records of tornadoes in northerly latitudes are spotty and incomplete because of the vast amount of uninhabited terrain and lack of monitoring, and it is certain that tornadoes have gone unseen and unreported.
The jet streams are rapidly moving upper-level currents. Traveling generally eastward in the tropopause, the polar jets reside at the juncture of the Ferrel cell and the Polar cell and mark the location of the polar cold front. During winter, a second jet stream forms at about the 30th parallel, at the interface of the Hadley and Ferrel cells, as a result of the contrast in temperature between tropical air and continental polar air.
The jet streams are not continuous, and fade in and out along their paths as they speed up and slow down. Though they move generally eastward, they may range significantly north and south. The polar jet stream also marks the presence of Rossby waves, long- scale (4000 - 6000 km in wavelength) harmonic waves which perpetuate around the globe.
4.1.2 The intertropical convergence zone and the Hadley cell
The trade winds converging at a high angle at the equatorial trough, the "doldrums", form the intertropical convergence zone [ITCZ]. The air in the trade wind belts is forced to rise in the ITCZ and large quantities of latent heat are released as the warm, moist maritime air cools to its condensation temperature. About half the sensible heat transported within the atmosphere originates in the 0 - 10°N belt; and most of this sensible heat is released by condensation in the towering cumulus rising within the ITCZ.
Over land masses the trade winds bring convective cloud which develops into heavy layer cloud with embedded thunderstorms when the air mass is lifted at the ITCZ.
The ITCZ is the boiler room of the Hadley tropical cell which provides the circulation forming the weather patterns, and climate, of the Northern Hemisphere south of 40°S. The lower level air rises in the ITCZ then moves poleward at upper levels - because of the temperature gradient effect - and is deflected to the east by Coriolis, at heights of 40 000 - 50 000 feet, while losing heat to space by radiative cooling.
The cooling air subsides in the sub-tropic region, warming by compression and forming the sub-tropical high pressure belt. Part of the subsiding air returns to the ITCZ as the south-east trade winds thus completing the Hadley cellular cycle. (The system is named after George Hadley [1685-1768], a British meteorologist who formulated the trade wind theory)
