Chinese to English: Foreword for an art exhibition: 山水之间 (The Shanshui within) General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
Source text - Chinese
Translation - English Ever since ancient times, landscapes have long served as a refuge from the worries of everyday life, providing an unparalleled realm of happiness. Chinese scholars took great delight when among the beautiful scenes of Shanshui (mountains and waters), and their sentiments were peacefully and poetically expressed in their various forms of art. It is not the landscape that is to be highly worshiped; the game of taking pleasure in such splendid scenery is the one that inspires us to cope with our affairs in accordance with the law of nature. Reflection on physical existence and one’s own soul is more than just possible within this joyful atmosphere, and people can take the opportunity to lay down their troubles and discover the essence of life as they enjoy spiritual cleansing.
Today, anything that can take us from the prison of the stereotypical physical world serves as the modern counterpart to how people used to take pleasure in landscapes. When people travel today, they are mostly shoved into a whirlwind full of time sitting in vehicles, restroom visits, hotels, and only a mere few moments to take in the wonders of nature. The wonders of multimedia achievements, on the other hand, have brought us an outlet where we can awaken our souls and minds with the meditative power of art. In much the same way the ancients enjoyed the mountains and waters, people can now escape the decadent world of materialism and consumerism and achieve momentary transcendence as they partake in games and indulgence in different forms of art, even while in the hustle and bustle of a crowd.
Chinese to English: Technology: Qualcomm Accepted China’s Fines, America Should Stop Being Acerbic General field: Tech/Engineering
Source text - Chinese
Translation - English The American company Qualcomm, a global chip-making giant, recently gathered a lot of headlines at a rather formidable cost. There is a backstory. The National Development and Reform Commission recently issued a $975 million fine for the company’s anti-trust violations and asked for five overhauls. Qualcomm acted very contrite, seemed ready to make amends and agreed to pay the huge fine.
Qualcomm ask for neither an administrative re-examination nor litigation. The company’s calm acceptance of the punishment showed how eager it was to end the matter and to ensure that any “unstable factors” for its Chinese operations would be eradicated. The market is more important than money, and compared to the money Qualcomm made in China, the $975 million fine is just a drop in the bucket.
The volume of the Chinese market surprised many global moguls. Qualcomm’s 2013 earnings topped $24.87 billion, with 49 percent of the total — or $12.3 billion — coming from the Chinese market. Qualcomm cannot handle losing the Chinese market.
Yet the American media has manipulated the news. The New York Times wrote in an article titled “China Hits Qualcomm with Fine” that “multinationals are bumping into a regulatory ceiling,” while the Associated Press has blamed China for “selective enforcement.”
It is ironic, in fact, that in the six years since China unveiled its anti-trust laws, out of the 335 companies the National Development and Reform Commission has fined, only 10 percent were foreign companies. Qualcomm would have been fined for the same violations in Europe and America too.
