Der Mönch rollt auf einem Quadrat mit einer Seitenlänge von 60 cm; ist die Feder vollständig aufgezogen, läuft er dreimal um das Quadrat herum. Während er läuft, bewegen sich die Hände und Füße, der Kopf schwenkt nach der Seite und nickt, die Augen rollen und der Mund geht auf und zu. Ursprünglich wurde das Ganze von einem Glockenspiel begleitet. Ein Glockenspiel hat auch der Automat aus dem Museum in Budapest [Abb. 2].
Der Mönch wird mit der Hand aufgezogen. Die Schnecke bewirkt eine konstante Antriebskraft, so dass die Figur immer gleich schnell rollt. Ein Getriebe aus drei Stufen und einem Windfang sorgt für den gleichmäßigen Ablauf des Räderwerks [Fig. 2]. Die ganze Mechanik gleicht damit einem Uhrwerk beziehungsweise dem Schlagwerk einer Uhr. Nachdem der Mönch 60 cm gelaufen ist, drückt ein Nocken eine Hubstange auf den Boden, worauf der Mönch eine Vierteldrehung macht: dabei wird das Rad bei der Hubstange angehoben, so dass nur noch das andere, gekerbte Rad den Mönch (gleich einem Zirkel) auf einem Viertelkreisbogen führt. Nach dieser Vierteldrehung hebt sich die Hubstange, und der Mönch rollt die nächsten 60 cm geradeaus weiter. Auf der Aufzugs- und auf der Räderwelle sitzen einige Nocken und Stiftenwalzen, um die Bewegung der Füße, der Hände und die Funktionen im Kopf, der Augen und des Mundes zu steuern. Auf einer zurückgelegten Strecke von 60 cm — das Antriebsrad hat sich dann viermal und das Schneckenrad einmal gedreht — werden die Füße abwechselnd achtmal gehoben, die rechte Hand bewegt sich 40,5 mal, die linke dagegen nur 22,5 mal, der Kopf schwenkt einmal um 45° nach links und rechts und nickt dabei ebenfalls einmal, die Augen rollen entsprechend einer Programmscheibe mit Stiften auf der Antriebswelle hin und her [Abb. 5] und der Mund öffnet sich viermal.
Translation - English Sequence of motions
The monk rolls on a 23.6 inch square; once the spring is fully wound up, it walks around the square three times. Hands and feet move as it walks, the head moves sideways and nods, the eyes roll, and the mouth opens and closes. Originally, this was accompanied by a glockenspiel. The Budapest automaton [Fig. 2] is also equipped with a glockenspiel.
The monk is wound up manually. The fusee provides constant propulsion so that the figure always moves at an even speed. A train of three gears with a flywheel ensures the regular operation of the wheel-work [Fig. 2]. The entire mechanism therefore resembles a clockwork or rather the striking mechanism of a clock. When the monk has walked 23.6 inches, a tappet pushes a lift rod to the floor, causing the monk to execute a quarter turn: the wheel near the lift rod is raised, so that only the other—notched—wheel guides the monk, similar to a compass, in a quarter of a circular arc. After this quarter turn, the lift rod is raised and the monk rolls in a straight line for another 23.6 inches. The winding stem as well as the wheel stem each bear several tappets and pin rollers controlling the movements inside the head as well as of the feet, hands, and mouth. Over the distance of 23.6 inches—after four revolutions of the drive wheel and one revolution of the worm wheel—the feet are lifted eight times each, the right hand moves 40.5 times, the left only 22.5 times, the head turns 45º each left and right, nodding once, while the eyes roll back and forth controlled by a program disk with pins on the driveshaft [Fig. 5], and the mouth opens four times.

Source text - German Die früheste erhaltene mir bekannte Automatenfigur stammt aus der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts. Es ist eine weibliche Figur, die heute in die reiche Tracht des ausgehenden 16. Jahrhunderts gekleidet ist. Die Figur hat die Größe einer mittleren Kinderpuppe von heute. In dem aus Eisenspangen gebildeten Rumpfe (Abb. 66) ist das eiserne Laufwerk untergebracht, das sich durchweg aus Elementen zusammensetzt, die der Uhrmacherei der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts geläufig waren. Die Figur wird durch zwei Laufräder fortbewegt, wobei sie die Füße vor und zurücksetzt und mit der rechten Hand eine Laute schlägt, die sie fest in der Linken hält. Dazu bewegt die Figur den Kopf abwechselnd nach rechts und nach links. Die Puppe, deren Entstehungszeit - nicht nach 1550 - am zuverlässigsten aus der breiten Form der Schuhe geschlossen werden kann, ist zunächst mit einem weißen ausgeschnittenen Leinenhemde bekleidet. Der Automat wurde pfleglich behandelt und in Ehren gehalten, denn als sein ursprüngliches Kleidchen verbraucht und aus der Mode war, fertigte man ihm — etwa 40 Jahre später — ein neues, das im wesentlichen die Formen der damals von Spanien ausgehenden internationalen Hoftracht und der Tracht der Vornehmen zeigt. Den Ausschnitt des "Brüstlings" haben wir uns mit einem jetzt verlorenen weißleinenen Krageneinsatz und mit einer Krause, dem Krös, bedeckt vorzustellen. Die Figur trägt eine große Mantelschleppe, dazu ein Häubchen, das wohl einmal mit einer Feder geschmückt war (Abb. 67). In den Farben der Seidenstoffe herrscht rot und gelb vor. Am Gesichte, das mit emailartigen Farben gefasst ist, haben noch spätere Zeiten gebessert und geändert, die Laute ist noch die alte. So ist diese kleine Kostbarkeit auf uns gekommen, wohl die einzige ihrer Art von ehedem mehreren, noch heute geduldig und mit viel Geräusch dahinlaufend und ihre Bewegungen ausführend, wenn eine sorgende und kundige Hand das Werk aufgezogen hat. Die Puppe ist alter österreichischer Privatbesitz und kam durch Erbgang aus den Niederlanden dahin.
Translation - English The earliest preserved automaton known to me dates to the mid-sixteenth century. It is a female figure, now dressed in the kind of ornate costume common around the end of the sixteenth century. The figure is about as large as a medium-sized modern children's doll. The torso, consisting of iron braces (Fig. 66), houses the iron running gear, which is entirely constructed of components commonly used in mid-sixteenth century clock-making. The figure is propelled by two wheels, moving its feet back and forth, its right hand strumming a lute which it holds rigidly in the left. It also turns its head alternately right and left. The doll, which, judging by the broad shape of its shoes, can hardly date back farther than 1550, is dressed in a low-cut white linen shirt. The automaton was well cared for: when its original dress was worn out and no longer in fashion, a new one was made for it about 40 years later, predominantly in the style of the international court costumes coming out of Spain at the time. The bodice probably featured an inset collar of white linen, now lost, covered with a frill, the "Krös." The figure is wearing a large train and a bonnet, which may once have been adorned with a feather (Fig. 67). The predominant colors of the silk fabrics are red and yellow. The face, which is coated with a sort of enamel, was modified in later times; the lute is still the original. And so this little gem has come to us, likely the only remaining one of its kind, and to this day it patiently—and noisily—walks along and goes through its motions once a skilled hand has wound up its gears. The doll is privately owned in Austria, where it arrived from the Netherlands as part of an inheritance.

Source text - German Die für uns in Frage kommenden Blätter sind ohne erkennbares System in den Traktat eingestreut und seien kurz vorgestellt. Sie zeigen u.a. (fol.19 v.) so exzentrische Gegenstände wie eine Bischofsmitra und einen Bischofsstab, die mit Hilfe von Kerzen und Randperforationen, in die Kristalle oder mit Wasser gefüllte Glaskügelchen eingelassen sind, von innen heraus leuchten. Man weiß nicht recht, ob es ironisch ist, wenn der Autor dieser "Apparatur" "nur geringen Wert" attestiert, im gleichen Atemzug aber behauptet, daß sie "um .nichts weniger geschätzt" würde. Ein anderer Apparat (fol. 3l v.), dem man diese Bezeichnung nur in seiner alten Bedeutung von etwas "Zugerichteten" bzw. "Gerät" zubilligen möchte, zeigt eine mit "puerilia" überschriebene Maskarade [sic]. Der Apparat, ein Holzgerüst, formt den Rücken eines Kamels, in dem offenkundig zwei junge Männer stecken, der eine vorne und mehr oder weniger versteckt, der andere hinten und als Reiter mit einer grotesken Maske ausstaffiert. Am unteren Rand ist noch die knappe Zeichnung des mechanisch beweglichen Kamelmauls dargestellt, das sich öffnen läßt und ein Glöckchen zum Tönen bringt.
Ähnlich grotesk, wenn auch ein wenig komplizierter, ist der "diavolo meccanico" auf fol. 59 v. , dem auf 60 r. und v. eine Beschreibung und die Darstellung von Einzelteilen wie Gesichtsmaske, Gehörn, Flügel mit Scharnier und ein Modellarm mit Gelenken und anpassbarer Hand mit beweglichen Fingern folgen. Die Beschreibung erklärt, was in der Zeichnung nur teilweise deutlich sichtbar gemacht wird, daß nämlich die Bewegungen über Schnüre auf Rollen erzeugt werden; erheblich wichtiger aber scheint uns, daß sie einen veritablen Hinweis auf die Funktion des mechanischen Teufels gibt: es ist nämlich von einem "opus ingeniosum" die Rede, das einst "in terrorem aspitientium" geschaffen worden sei, d.h. um den Betrachter in Angst und Schrecken zu versetzen. Es mag sein, daß Battisti nicht ganz unrecht hat, wenn er die "Bestimmung dieser Maske für eine religiöse im weiten Sinn" hält, daß sie jedoch Bestandteil einer "sacra rappresentazione" war, lässt das nächste Blatt (fol . 63 v./64 r) mit der "strega infuocata" eher unwahrscheinlich erscheinen. Dabei handelt es sich um die bislang bei weitem raffinierteste Apparatur. Zu sehen ist eine feuerspeiende weibliche Gestalt, gehörnt, mit beweglichen Fledermausflügeln ausgestattet, Klauenfüßen und einem reptilienartigen Schwanz, der unter ihrem Rock herausschlängelt. Wie die daneben angebrachte Zeichnung zeigt, haben wir hier keine Maske vor uns, sondern ein künstliches (Holz) Gerüst, das wiederum über Rollen und Schnüre Einzelteile mobilisiert und allem Anschein nach so gemeint ist, dass es eine schiefe Ebene herabzumarschieren imstande zu sein scheint.
Translation - English The pages of interest to us are scattered through the tractate in no discernible order; they are briefly introduced here. Among other things, they depict such eccentric objects as a bishop's miter and staff (fo1. 19 f.3) illuminated from within by means of candles and perforations along the rim, in which crystals or water-filled glass beads are set. It is hard to tell if the author is being sarcastic in ascribing "only minor value" to this "apparatus," while claiming at the same time that is was "cherished nonetheless." Another apparatus (fol. 31 f.), which can be accorded this designation only in its old meaning of "contrivance," i.e. "contraption," displays a masquerade entitled "puerilia." The apparatus, a wooden scaffold, forms a camel's back, evidently holding two young men—one in the front and more or less concealed, the other in the rear and equipped
as a rider with a grotesque mask. The lower margin includes a sketch of the mechanically moveable camel's mouth, which may be opened, upon which it sounds a chime.
Similarly grotesque, albeit somewhat more complex, is the "diavolo meccanico" on fol. 59 f., which is followed on 60 b. and f. by the description and representation of components such as a facial mask, horns, wings with hinges, a model arm with joints, and an adjustable hand with movable fingers. The description explains what is made only partially visible in the drawing, namely that the movements are generated through the use of strings on wheels; much more importantly, it provides us with an actual hint at the function of the mechanical devil: it speaks of an "opus ingeniosum," which was once created "in terrorem aspitientium," i.e. to terrify and frighten the beholder. Battisti may not be altogether wrong when he deems the "function of this mask [to be] religious in a wider sense," however, the next page (fol. 63 f. / 64 b.) with the "strega infuocata" makes it seem unlikely that it was part of a "sacra rappresentazione." The latter is so far decidedly the most sophisticated apparatus. It shows a fire-breathing, horned female figure with movable bat wings, taloned feet, and a reptilian tail snaking out from under her skirts. As the adjacent drawing shows, this is no mask, but rather an artificial (wooden) scaffold which once again mobilizes components via strings and wheels, and which is apparently designed to march down an incline.

I am a native German speaker who has resided in the U.S. since 1995. I have extensive experience translating both from German into English and vice versa on many different levels, most recently as a subtitle translator (mostly English to German) for SDI Media in Los Angeles, California. This position, which involved working on a wide range of different topics, required extreme attention to detail, consistency, and knowledge and research of intercultural, i.e. "lingo," issues in popular culture, sports, and a variety of other areas. Other translation work I have done has been in the academic realm, also covering a wide range of topics from psychology to medieval clockmaking, as well as the occasional legal translation (early on after my arrival in California, I assisted as an interpreter in a court deposition and with the translation of the associated documents). Moreover, a great deal of my qualifications are in language teaching and have involved designing curricula, exams, and other materials in strongly team-oriented environments. I am also highly familiar with Internet-related technologies and have worked as an HTML coder and web site asset designer. Last but not least, I have a passion for video games and for fantasy RPG titles in particular, although other genres have captured my imagination as well.
