conditinally transferred to the next course/conditionally allowed to enroll in the next course

Explanation:
One way to say this. The first option is more literal; the second option is the way it happens, at least in the American school system.

I think it regards a course sequence. The year of study is immaterial: one can take Ethics 101 as a freshman and Ethics 102 as a senior. Here, passing Ethics 101 is a prerequisite for taking Ethics 102; however, if a student has not completed all the requirements of Ethics 101, he/she may conditionally be allowed to enroll in Ethics 102. In the US system, one needs to take active measures to obtain the permission; it does not take place automatically.

I added this note earlier, but it didn't appear for some reason: If he's in college or university, I would say "to the next year." https://www.google.com/search?biw=1427&bih=750&q="promoted t...

disagree  Richard Coombes: He isn't being promoted, he's being allowed to progress on a provisional basis
9 hrs
-> I didn't put "on a provisional basis" or "conditionally" because it was not part of the phrase in the header.

Explanation:
Just another version of this translation, presumably, conveying the idea.

disagree  Richard Coombes: On condition of what? In English we say 'conditionally' or 'provisionally' in a context such as this.
