A bit of Yorkshire trivia:
When I were nobbut a lad I'd oft go laikin' taws on't causey.

When I was a young boy, I would often go out to play marbles on the pavement.

BTW: to knuckle down (get down work) is an expression from the game of marbles. Shots are only valid when the knuckle is touching the ground.

Any marble in the ring of play can be the Zielmurmel/target marble, the player shooting picks one out as the one he or she is going to knock out of the ring.
