We were writing more phonetically hundred years ago, e.g., warti now is vārti sweces then is sveces now stāw uz Diewa galdiņa -> stāv uz Dieva galdiņa sewi would be sevi now Es newaru - Es nevaru And, of course, Es ar ganiņš piewilkos. :) Similarly, Wisa tava draudze raud. Here, in modern spelling you will find policijas valdēs (pl) or valdē(sing). For more, please see other texts of those times, say P. Šmits, Latviešunpasakas un teikas. Please note that the was viesības then and now, likewise devis. Latvians did not always had so called phonetical dark [u], but, also, a regular phonetic [w]. :) |
