amarpaul sahib, thank you for correcting that. I thought I had written down "information" which you corrected to "investigation"...was in a hurry so mixed things up..don't need to see the links...sounds correct as you wrote it.

aburiaz sahib, thank you for mentioning that پرچہ business...now I remember the term پرچہ کاٹنا...and so your use of اجرا makes perfect sense to me now.

Qudsia Ji, Just to explain it further:

The vernacular term used for FIR (First Investigation Report) in our Police Stations here is 'پرچہ' and '(اجرا (کرنا' is to 'register' or 'issue'. Thus ' اجرائے پرچہ' will be 'Registration or issuance of an FIR or a case'

Thanks for your comments. I agree that the term is hardly standard - in fact, I've never encountered it before. However, I'm translating the original FIR, and this is what is written. Furthermore, I still feel that aburiaz sa'ab has interpreted it correctly. The only thing that I still disagree with is the expansion of FIR as 'first INVESTIGATION report' ... it isn't so. FIR stands for "first INFORMATION report" - both in India and in Pakistan - as can be seen here: http://www.cplc.org.pk/content.php?page=40. This is hardly surprising considering that the IPC and PPC are both relics dating back to the British raj, and have only been amended or updated on a piecemeal basis.

amarpaul...That is what I mean "First Investigation Report"...just used the wrong word in a hurry. The reason I'm suggesting this is because I'm accustomed to hearing "FIR" in Pakistan...and اجرائی پرچہ seems to me something someone made up just to give it an Urdu version...I could be wrong, but it does not sound like a term they actually use at the police stations...this could very well be a back translation...so that's why it seems like this was something they used simply to translate "FIR" or "First Investigation Report."

The "Written request" portion of my translation wasn't to translate this term...it was to offer the full translation for تحریری درخواست و اجرائی پرچہ,...so to translate this, correcting what amarpaul pointed out: "Written request and First Investigation Report"

If اجرائی پرچہ is not a standard police/law term, then for complete accuracy I would suggest giving "First Investigation Report" in brackets, since it's something we assumed...and write something like "Issuance paper [First Investigation Report?]", or "Initial document [First Investigation Report?]"

Thanks for this question, Qudsia Ji. It is valid for expressing the 'preparation' of FIR but , IMO, the word 'Registration' appears to be more proper in this context.

The term FIR is found only in the Indian sub-continent, so it would be better to expand it fully for audiences outside our native countries. Also, I believe that the correct expansion of "FIR" is "First Information Report".

Just wondering if only the abbreviation "FIR" or "First Investigation Report" can be used in translation (omitting the registration part), so the complete translation would be "Written request and FIR (First investigation Report)"?

You are right to some extent. The literal meanings of اجرا کرنا یا اجرائی are 'to issue' But, as an FIR can be issued only after the process of 'registration', so I have used the word 'Registration'. But, literally, it will NOT be considered wrong, if you use 'Issuance of an FIR.'

Thanks for your answer; I always though "اجرائی" meant "to issue", but in the context this seemed unclear.

Could you kindly clarify this further to me.
