Romanzo americano contemporaneo. Dopo una lite i due protagonisti non si vedono per un po', fino a quando lui non la chiama nuovamente.

October. He calls me to apologize a few days later. My whole body stiffens at the sound of his voice. He continues cheerfully: he had no right to get so angry with me. Sometimes frustration is just too much and he loses it. Forget about marriage. He’ll find another way. But he wants to keep seeing me. Could I come over for weekend and bring back videos?
As if nothing had happened. *I let it sink for a beat*.

Shrew, forse sì, ti conviene chiedere all'autrice. Entrambe le interpretazioni restano possibili, anche se questa secondo me è più "economica", nel senso che non costringe ad ipotizzare che beat stia per bit. Ma meglio essere sicuri.

ho come l'impressione che quel beat sia un typo per "bit", o forse un'espressione in AE, e quel "sink" mi sembra sinonimo di "sink in" (vd link)

Asker: Diciamo che ero già combattuta tra le due soluzioni...vale a dire il battito del cuore e il digerire la notizia...ora sono proprio messa male...chissà che non mi tocchi chiederlo all'autrice...;)

Asker: Mistero risolto...per lei beat è in senso musicale, a pause between two notes, in francese si dice un beat, quindi qualcosa di più poetico. Per cui credo che in italiano sia la soluzione migliore quella di heartbeat non venendomi altro in soccorso al momento.
