Spanish term

caballería

Spanish to English Social Sciences History economic history - 19th century Cuba
In the article, here's how the term is used:

"Para el año 1827, Marrero, L. (1984, p. 61) estimaba que el 90% del territorio cubano correspondía a bosques, montes y otros tipos de paisajes, un 4,2% se encontraba bajo cultivo y un 5,8% estaba destinado a pastos. Entre ambas fechas la superficie de bosques había pasado de 409.825 a 250.845 caballerías."

This term appears in an academic paper on Cuba. It refers to a measurement of land area. I found this definition in the RAE: "Medida agraria usada en la isla de Cuba, equivalente a 1343 áreas."

Haven't been able to find a translation, would appreciate any suggestions.
Many thanks

Thanks all for help. Will stick with the same term, and exlpanation of hectare equivalence. Useful reference pages included, appreciate that.

caballeria

It seems as though the same term is used in English, probably with an explanation.

agree philgoddard : You could just convert it into hectares for simplicity. And yours was the first of three near-identical answers, so it gets my vote.

1 "Caballería" = 33.2 acres

I don't think there is a translation of that word but you can use the equivalence to do the calculation: 1 caballería = 33.2 acres (in Cuba)
