German term

Bestätigung zur Kenntnisnahme

German to English Medical General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters Clinical Trial
"Darüber hinaus senden wir Ihnen eine Kopie der von der Ethikkommission XXX geforderten Bestätigung zur Kenntnisnahme des Protokolls und der Investigator's Brochure (Zentrum ABC)."

From a letter about a clinical trial. I know "zur Kenntnisnahme" generally means "for the information of", but "for the information of the protocol" makes no sense. (I'm quite certain that Protokoll is in fact protocol here, and not record.) And I'm not sure whether Bestätigung is confirmation, acknowledgement or what. But "Bestätigung zur Kenntnisnahme" seems to be a complete entity, but I simply can't work out an English translation for it. TIA for your help.

I think the original sentence is a mess ... and I would ask the client for an explanation. At the moment I see two ways to read this (there might be more): "Bestätigung DER Kenntnisnahme des Protokolls" (there are already suggestions pointing in this direction) or, if the author has forgotten something: "... Bestätigung zur Kenntnisnahme SOWIE EINE KOPIE des Protokolls ...".
Bernhard Sulzer Sep 28, 2010:
I do agree with phil's interpretation but that's just a longer version of acknowledgment of the protocol etc., right? see my suggestions below.

Do you have any more context? What comes before this? Who is writing to whom? And I don't suppose the "Bestätigung" is one of the documents you're translating?
It sounds like the ethics committee is asking someone (perhaps the investigator) to confirm that they've read the protocol and investigator's brochure.
Bernhard Sulzer Sep 28, 2010:
I agree, Rowan. :)

Acknowledgement? I just found this KudoZ question:

Makes me think that simply using "acknowledgement" (as in acknowledgement of the protocol or even protocol acknowledgement) might be the way to go here.
