Persian (Farsi) term

ابری مه آلود

Persian (Farsi) to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Autobiography
Greetings,

It’s from a book about a woman who is standing in her garden in Pakistan and suddenly has a horrifying experience, as if something evil has passed just behind her head.

All the best, and many thanks,

Simon

foggy cloud

this would be the literal version...you could probably also say something like "an obscure cloud"

agree Ryan Emami : Yes, your translation fits here better; I thought there was a kasra between the two words.

disagree Habib Shariati : Your translation is that of ابر مه الود while we have ابری مه الود for further consideration you can have a look at mine, all the best

Omitting the "a" hardly warrants a "disagree" when the meaning is clear, but thanks for pointing it out...no one else was bothered by it...and in my "explanation" I did offer "an obscure cloud", which indicates my awareness of ی نکره

foggy and cloudy; misty and cloudy

ابری means "cloudy" and مه آلود means "misty" or "foggy."

a fog/ a thin fog

'ابري مه ألود' is grammatically incorrect. Because it can either be ابري
or, ابري and مه ألود

Also I think fog may be more appropriate than mist, if the visibility in this story has decreased dramatically. Therefore I recomens - a fog or a thin fog.

Finally, in بری مه آلود the first word is used as a noun and the second word as an adjective. Therefore it total I treat it is a noun, and add an 'a' behind it - A fog.

example: A thin fog had blurred my vision, and I couldn't see their faces clearly.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Edward Plaisance Jr : The context here indicates a feeling of the presence of unknown danger or evil. The word "cloud" is always associated with this, not the word "fog"

[a] misty cloud

I don't think any great invention is needed. In both farsi and english, the metaphor is a cliche: English: http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navc... Farsi: http://www.google.com/search?hl=de&q="ابری مه آلود"&btnG=Suc...
