Se trata solamente de verificar si entiendo el sentido de esta oración. Asumo que es así, pero no estoy 100% seguro.
Vienen hablando del método usado para alojar a las ratas usadas en el experimento.

El fragmento reza así: DURING THE 18 DAYS OF EXPERIMENT THE ANIMALES WERE HOUSED ONE BY ONE IN ORDER TO AVOID MUTUAL REMOVAL AND EATING, AND THEIR WEIGHT HAS BEEN TOOK (sic) AT THE BEGINNING AND THE END OF EXPERIMENT.

¿TO AVOID MUTUAL REMOVAL AND EATING?

Supongo que era más fácil que se fueran adaptando a las demás en comparación con poner todas juntas a la vez.

Explanation:
Removal = también a "supresión", "eliminación", "matazón" (véase Amador, SOPENA; Maria Moliner, GREDOS; VOX, Bibliograph; SANSONI, 4 volúmenes, etc.)

"Mutilar" is not included in the meanings of "to remove", futhermore the author uses past (and not present) tenses in the original... Not so affordable translation solution, IMHO
