Thing is a very common word. It could be translated into Bengali in many different ways, such as: jinish, podartho, bostu, drobbo, shamogri, mal, malamal, bishoy, ghotona etc etc...

As the answer of your question, jinish is most frequently and colloquially used.

Podartho is mainly used in scientific context. Such as "moulik podartho" , "Jougik pothrtho" etc. An example of it would be, "police 20 KG bishphorok podartho udhdhar koreche."
