German term

Am Anfang war die Entwicklung

German to English Medical Medical: Dentistry metal-ceramic restorations.
Title to article on alloys for metal-ceramic restorations. This stresses that the development process is often overlooked, though it is vital to the production of the alloy: “Am Anfang war die Entwicklung. Dieser Schritt wird im Allgemeinen gar nicht beachtet. Das Funktionieren der Legierung wird vorausgesetzt. Entscheidend dafür ist aber eine sorgsame Entwicklung”. Then follows description of the development steps in producing the alloy – from drawing up requirement specifications, through the various tests involved up to final release for sale. I understand the term but was looking for a suitable form of words.

Discussion

Paul Cohen Aug 5, 2007:
Not a bad choice, Ken - "It all started with..." is excellent, if I do say so myself ;-), but I wonder whether alloys are "designed". Engineers design machines, cars, equipment and inventions, but we generally don't talk about "designing" new substances.

It all started with design and development

in absence of a reference to research, i'm not convinced that R&D fits ... thus perhaps "design and development"

i don't think "biblical" references such as "in the beginning" are essential unless 1. there are similar references or 2. the text is peppered with humour

In the Beginning was the Development

I think you have to keep it like this as it is a reference to the Old Testament

in the beginning there was development

if you need to stay literal.

With a bit more artistic licence, perhaps 'development came first'?

hope it helps ;-)

development was at the heart of it all
development got the ball rolling/started it all
It's all down to development

any of these might do the job

First there was R&D

Either the context as mbrodie states, but another option often used is "First there was..."

The "first there is/was" is the Buddhist proverb, used by Donavan in his music and Eliot in literature:

"First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is. It is the journey into self, through self, back to self, to return to the place from which we began...."

agree Dr. Fred Thomson : In the beginning there was R&D. I think you must keep the allusion to the Old Testament

Thanks, Dr. Fred!
agree BrigitteHilgner : I like this best - and I don't think that "in the beginning" is a MUST in this context.

It all started with R&D

If you believe in the Bible, it all started with Adam and Eve.

In this case, it all started somewhat later... ;-)
Peer comment(s):

neutral Susan Zimmer : actually, it all started with light :)) "And then there was light....".....I knew I had that coming!!

Actually, in the beginning, there was nothing. And God said "Let there be light" - and a while later, researchers developed advanced alloys for metal-ceramic restorations. ;-))
