Out of the tens of thousands of NRMs around the world, only six, as of 2005, have engaged in homicidal or suicidal behavior (not counting Islamist movements). Why, then, does the "killer cult" stereotype persist? As discussed previously, "cult" is a ***constructed category***, and violence is one of the main attributes of this construction. The anticult movement's argument is not that some NRMs are violent, but that any religion that engages in violence is by definition a "cult".
