三尺罗衣挂无影树上. "like a three-foot garment of gauze hanging from an illusive tree." Explanation: To me, this is a metaphor to conjure up a vivid picture of the graceful movements of Tai Chi. Both the silk garment made of transparent gauze material (罗衣) and the imaginary tree (无影树) are transient in quality and existance, resembling the changing poses and movements in Tai Chi. |

三尺罗衣挂无影树上. the Shadowless Tree? Explanation: If 无影树 is the name of a specific type of tree, then I'd definitely try to find the name of the tree and add it to the translation since I believe the sentence is trying to draw an analogy between the beauty of Taichi and the way a silk garment sways on this type of tree. However, if it's not a specific type of tree, but a Buddhist creation (which it may very be since there are numerous Buddhist references to 无影塔 and other shadowless things) , then I'd leave it at "the Shadowless Tree". -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 12 hrs 16 mins (2005-09-27 22:49:49 GMT) Post-grading -------------------------------------------------- I would translate it as "like a three-foot robe hanging from a shadowless tree" Here is a referral to the shadowless tree in Zen Buddhism on the following website: http://terebess.hu/english/jimgibbs.html Come Buddha, please sit for a while under this shadowless tree and meditate on my ragged, hand- me-down Zen dharma. I have patched it together from scraps of material gathered from the garbage dumps of my Zen enviroment. This patchwork dharma may look like a raggle-taggle affair, full of intellectual holes, but I think you will find it soft, of good texture, well made and comfortable. [6] |
