How Diabetes Happens:
As one eats carbohydrates, it is broken down to sugar or glucose which enters your blood stream. The more carbohydrate is consumed, the higher the blood sugar goes. In response, your body produces Insulin whose job is to push the blood sugar into the cells.
On the surface of each cell are insulin receptors, which act like doors that open and close to regulate the inflow of blood sugar. After many years of High Carbohydrate diet, your cells have been bombarded with so much insulin and these doors begin to malfunction and shut down. With less doors open, your body need to produce even more insulin to push the glucose into the cells. More insulin causes even more doors to close and as this vicious cycle continues, a condition call “insulin resistance” sets in. When your body can no longer produce enough insulin to push the blood sugar into the cells, Diabetes results.
The key point for you to understand is that your energy, wellness and longevity are primarily dependent on improving the sensitivity of your cells to insulin – how well your cells open and close the doors and clear sugar from the blood.
Through proper nutrition, sensitivity of your cells to insulin to help your body get the sugar out of the blood into the cells and be metabolized and turned into energy can be increased. Metabolism is the food processing and energy production system of your body. Insulin is the master hormone of metabolism. When it is out of balance and insulin levels are consistently elevated, complications are created:

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) also known as HEARTBURN, INDIGESTION, ACID REFLUX.
The esophagus is the rube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach. GERD happens when a muscle at the end of your esophagus does not close properly. This allows stomach contents to leak back, or reflux into the esophagus and irritate it. Then you may feel a burning in the chest or throat called HEARTBURN and sometimes, you can taste the stomach fluid in the back of your mouth. This is acid INDIGESTION. If you have these symptoms more than twice a week, you may have GERD.
How can we improve the symptoms:
Avoiding alcohol and spicy, fatty or acidic foods that trigger heartburn
Eating smaller meals
Not eating close to bedtime
Losing weight if needed
Wearing loose fitting clothes
Symptoms of GERD:
Uncomfortable feeling behind the breastbone that seems to be moving upward from the stomach
Burning sensation in the back of the throat
Symptom is often experienced after a meal
One experiences heartburn or acid indigestion two or more times a week
Antacids only provide temporary relief
Taking prescription medication but continues to experience symptoms
Foods that can worsen reflux symptoms:
Citrus fruits, Chocolate, Drinks with alcohol or caffeine, fatty and fried foods, garlic and onions, mint flavorings, spicy foods, tomato based foods e.g. spaghetti, salsa, chili and pizza
