There weren't many of you were there?

Oh yes, yes, I met some of them. I met one of them, and awfully liked - two of them. Then - dropped them now I think though. They may be dead for all I know, some of them. - http://www.qualidata.ac.uk/edwardians/search/sections.asp?se...

Make no doubt: Ashcroft is not perfect. No politician is. He’s not terribly liked by everyone, especially in minority circles. - http://www.chrismorrill.com/jean-carnahan.html

I liked you too much

Así de simple
Peer comment(s):

disagree Michele Fauble : too much indicates regret in English - past tense implies he no longer likes her. I should have said could imply he no longer likes her.

Demasiado indicates regret in Spanish. Obviously everybody knows a past indicates past, but I never heard using a past tense automatically implies the action does NOT happen in the present in any language on Earth.
agree Deborah Workman : I think regret is implied in the phrase offered for translation. I see no problem with the past tense. With more context we'd know if he liked her too much for his own good, to live happily without her, or what.

I took a shine/a liking to you

I would put something along the lines of "I really took a shine to you" or "I took quite a liking to you", especially if it is in a romantic context.

Good luck!

Peer comment(s):

neutral Michele Fauble : Depending on where she's from, "took a shine" might not be understood

I was so fond of you

It is very difficult to say, but when you really like someone, being fond is a good option

fond1 (fŏnd)
adj., fond·er, fond·est.
Having a strong liking, inclination, or affection: fond of ballet; fond of my nieces and nephews.
Affectionate; tender: a fond embrace.
Immoderately affectionate or indulgent; doting: fond grandparents who tended to spoil the child.
Cherished; dear: my fondest hopes.
Archaic. Naively credulous or foolish

And there are many other ways, depending on the degree of feeling you want to convey, althouth I would steer clear of using "too much" with a negative feeling.
Other possibilities, following your note

I really thought the world of you
I thought highly of you
I felt a strong connection with you
There was a good chemistry between us
