Demasiado indicates regret in Spanish. Obviously everybody knows a past indicates past, but I never heard using a past tense automatically implies the action does NOT happen in the present in any language on Earth.

: I think regret is implied in the phrase offered for translation. I see no problem with the past tense. With more context we'd know if he liked her too much for his own good, to live happily without her, or what.
