low seat (convenient for changing footwear)
looking at the pictures in Google many of the descalzadoras seem to be of a low height to avoid bending too far to reach one's feet.

Just out of interest there is this piece of furniture especially designed to sit on while changing footwear, with an attached footrest:

: As neilmac says Google images gives many hits on items I wouldn't call footstools!

Mind you!

I still think this is a commode as the vast majority of sites with "descalcadora" on describe them as "preciosa/elegante" and some are even on antique sites and are French...

Footstool/commode
is not really the thing here, now is it? :-) :-)
Note from asker:
Aren't commodes sort of mobile toilets for aged or incontinent people? The photo certainly looks like what I saw on google. |
In English, a "commode" can refer either to a toilet more precisely, or a kind of bureau. The word comes from French, where the adjective "commode" means "convenient" or "agreeable," and the noun refers to a piece of furniture with drawers. ... |

ottoman
Calling it an ottoman rather than a footstool definitely implies that the thing is fairly chic; I don't know if this term is used in the UK, but it is fairly common in North America.

Note from asker:
They also do "otomanes" which is another item. Thanks anyway ,) |
