I started in the mills when I was 16 years old. When I started in the mills you started at the bottom. I was handed the sweeping brush and I swept the Ring Room* floor. I did that for about 3 or 4 months and then I was asked if I'd like to become what they called a Roller Picker, picking the dust and the fluff off the rollers and the ring frames, because otherwise it would get in the thread and make what they call a slub, which is a bad fault. So I became a Roller Picker, then I reached the exalted heights of a Doffer*. Now a Doffer was a member of a team and they went round the ring frames when the cops or bobbins were full of cotton. The doffing team would go round and take all the full cops off, replace them with empty tubes and start the machine up again.
Есть примечания:
Ring Room: room in factory with ring frames - spinning machines
slub - a lump on a thread (шишка)
Doffer - a person who removes empty bobbins or spindles from a textile machine)
