This is an application form for shares. In the applicant details section, there are tickboxes under the category "restriction". The options are:
Mineur - Majeur incapable
and then
tutelle - curatelle - sous sauvegarde de justice
I am translating from French (France) to English (UK). The notion in France of tutelle for a minor or incapable adult seems to be total responsibility for all acts in civil life, with curatelle being more assistance/supervision in decisions for acts in civil life. Sous sauvegarde de justice seems to be some kind of interim protection while a decision of the courts on curatelle/tutelle is pending. But how to choose the right word in English where there is no scope for me to provide any context/explanation. I wondered:
curatelle - curatorship/supervision
tutelle - guardianship
sous sauvegarde de justice - under protection of a judicial authority
but I am not confident. I have read entries in proz glossaries etc., but feel I need further clarification.

Of course, your main problem is knowing how to deal with terms that do not necessarily have any exact equivalent in UK English. In UK law there seems to be only one form of guardianship (check out www.guardianship.gov.uk for more information). You could go for a blanket term - 'any form of public guardianship' for example - but that would leave you with two surplus tick boxes! Is the form intended for UK people living in the UK? Or for Brits living in France? If the latter, you might need to leave the French with a translation in brackets (because it's possible they are actually under those forms of protection). If the former, you probably need to go for rough equivalents that still make some sort of sense to a UK person (after all, if you're under the protection of the Public Guardianship system, then you'll know what it's talking about and tick the box - if you've never heard of it, then you're not going to be ticking any of the boxes anyway!).
