Selected

its lengthy /prolonged formative period notwithstanding

in spite of its protracted formative period

regardless of/in spite of its prolonged development and formation period

These are the options.
Peer comment(s):

agree Dorene Cornwell : maybe notwithstanding its lengthy period of development and formation

thanks, Dorene; yes, the syntax you propose sounds good

despite taking a long time to develop and establish itself, (this area of) science remains....

thanks Levan
agree Alexander Demyanov : I don't think "a" is in order here. Maybe "its lengthly"++ It's incorrect to use "a" when one knows what (period) he is referring to. Here one knows. If you don't like "its" you can use "the" but "a" is just not correct grammatically

thanks, i don't see the problem with 'a' myself...it could be without a, but if its lengthy development period and lengthy est. period then it needs an 'a'
agree Dmytro Voskolovych : or "formation period"

yep, that too, thanks Dmytro ;)
disagree Dorene Cornwell : "establishment" is sometimes used as an adjective, but not in the sense used here. Also the second variant is just unwieldy and the register is slightly too informal

thanks Dorene, again I don't think I agree with you here :)

despite the long history of its establishment and development

- another option
Peer comment(s):

agree Irene N : I would use 'in spite of', it's milder, does not imply 'вопреки', 'назло'. Or am I too pedant?

For hum hau. To my ear it's the other way around: "in spite" does imply "spite", while "despite" doesn't

No matter how long it has taken [this field] to develop and mature...

Очень люблю глаголы.
Оба варианта, предложенные уважаемыми коллегами, у меня встречаются сплошняком, в длинных срочных заказах, когда катастрофически нет времени подумать.
Peer comment(s):

agree pmakinen : I really like "mature" here

however long was the period of its coming to being and development

...the field of science remains actual even today, however long was the period of its coming to being and development.

"Становление" -- coming to being, лично мне так встречалось. Поэтому перенес вперед.

Просто еще один способ сказать то-же самое.

neutral Dorene Cornwell : register is a little too informal here
