Spanish term
tesis
Spanish to English
Science
Agriculture
Crop sciences, fungicide
Hi all,
I'm having trouble with "tesis" in the example sentences below (Spanish Spanish for UK English), taken from a short paper comparing a new fungicide (for grapevine downy mildew) against a commercial rival and control. In one case it seems to represent an area "plantas por tesis" but in most instances seems to imply "test" or "study". "Plot" would fit nicely, but considering the first example below it needs to be something other than plot:
"Para dicha determinación se evaluaron 100 hojas por parcela elemental, 400 plantas por tesis."
"En la tercera evaluación se puede comprobar como en la parcela T3 se sigue encontrando diferencias significativas frente a las tesis T1 y T2."
There a couple of tables where the following appears:
Tesis 1st application 2nd application 3rd application
T1 [Test product] [date/dosage] [date/dosage] etc.
T2 [Reference product] etc.
T3 [Control (no product)]
I have come across this: https://www.proz.com/kudoz/english-to-spanish/agriculture/76... but I'm not convinced and would like to find a definition or more examples of its usage.
TIA for any help.

sample (plot)
From the context, it appears to refer to the sample plot/area (the area or plot sampled). So, it would mean something like "100 leaves per sample plot, 400 plants per sample."
NB: Most of the text like this I've translated are about powdery mildew (https://www.agric.wa.gov.au/table-grapes/powdery-mildew-grap...

Or "trial plot" , as Neil mentions...

Or "trial plot" , as Neil mentions...
Example sentence:
... the population was approximately 50 plants per sample plot.
... an average of 26 fertile plants per sample plot...

Comment: "Thanks Neil, this is similar to what I had penciled in "trial plot""

Al parecer se realizaron estudios para comparar la efectividad de dos fungicidas. Supongamos que a la parcela T1 le aplicaron el fungicida "A" y a la parcela T2 le aplicaron el fungicida "B" etc.

thesis (that…) a statement or an opinion that is discussed in a logical way and presented with evidence in order to prove that it is true
The basic thesis of the book is fairly simple.
These latest findings support the thesis that sexuality is determined by nature rather than choice.

"Thesis" is the literal translation and in both languages it is used to refer to the above-mentioned connotation. None of the Academic Theses I have found use this word involving this connotation. I do not know why it is used that way in Spain, but who Am I to contradict them?

Esto no impide que usando tu creatividad selecciones el término Case 1, Case 2... etc.
Besides there are three "tesis" - T1, T2 and T3 and this is a very simple article that doesn't present any hypotheses whatsoever, never mind three of them.
Del lat. thesis, y este del gr. θέσις thésis.
Estas son todas las connotaciones de la palabra "tesis" en español. De ellas, solo una indica que la palabra es usada como sinónimo de "hipótesis". Aquí no se refiere a un trabajo académico para obtener un grado universitario, por lo cual la única alternativa que veo es la de su uso como sinónimo de hipótesis. En la parcela uno aplicaron el producto a probar, en la parcela 2 un producto de referencia y en la parcela 3 no se utilizó ningún fungicida.
Downy mildew, caused by Plasmopara viticola, is a major disease of grapevines that originates from North America. It was first detected in a commercial Western Australian vineyard in October 1998 and has since been found in all grape growing areas in the state.
