Term Definition
Massing - (Building Massing):
The volume and shape of a building.
Massing (and scale/size) of new construction and rehabilitations should be similar to the massing. A commercial building is typically a rectangular mass with a flat roof. Homes can be simple rectangular mass, or more complex with numerous additions, and typically have gable or hipped roofs.

Massing: (noun) The general size and shape of a building, which may be worked out before any of the fine details. A massing model, which shows the rough shape and proportions of a building, can be created.

Bom trabalho.

Hi, Francisco. It's written "masting" in the original document, so this is a misspelling. Your answer makes much more sense, thank you so much! You've nailed it!
expressisverbis Feb 3, 2020:
Francisco, desvendou o "crime"!
Francisco Chagas Feb 3, 2020:
"Masting" or massing? (Kept short since I am posting from my phone.)

Dear Cristina,

In such feasibility studies, massing (and not masting) is an integral part of determining any project's viablility. In layman terms, a massing study deals with the predictive assessment of a built space's total mass (or volume); such as with the abovementioned zoning study, these two are fundamental in ascertaining the qualities and effect of such space within itself and its surroundings.
